While you're all singing E.C.s praises, let me remind you that he started out playing Les Pauls and SGs........

Even so, while not 'GOD', he is an incredibly talented player and one of the greatest in the history of the electric guitar. Tunes like 'Layla', 'Crossroads', and his blues covers from the early '90s certainly put him head and shoulders above most of his contemporaries (notice I didn't say ALL).

Oh yeah, Eric was a Gibson guy. He used a 335 for a while too.

I think Robert Johnson might argue that "Crossroads" was hardly an EC tune! And the "Crossroads" riff that made the Cream cover so huge was developed in the old 1963 "What's Shakin" band with Steve Winwood on vocals and harp. So it was really a cover of a cover. If you've never heard Winwood's rendition of Crossroads, do. It'll blow you away. Makes the Cream version sound like Pat Boone.

Clapton broke ground. He was first in several areas, well before his followers. His interpretations of the blues, his sound, his incredible melodic instincts. He's all about timing, breaking the mold back then. Now, I'd say any number of players can blow him away, Derek Trucks being only one of many. But that's cool, EC is a deaf old man, whaddya expect? Can't stay top gunslinger forever.

Clapton is not only NOT a writer, but he's sanitized a whole generation with this self-serving tome. Patty Boyd's book attempts to set the record straight, a much better read.

But the ultimate diss in EC's cold and lifeless work is the utter lack of any insider guitarist info. It's like he's writing the book only for middle-aged housewives. There is NOTHING in it referencing playing insights, gear, tone, knowledge, evolution of guitar taste...NADA. And that is a huge insult to the fan/players of the world who deserve a little insider dope for their $30.

I'd say skip it and read the Boyd book. You won't get any gear 411, but you will find out what really happened after midnight.

i've heard quite a few people say they were disappointed by the book... i most likely won't waste my money on it... he was a guitarist, you'd think he'd discuss it a bit more in the book

I read most of the book on my flights to and from LA this week. It's an interesting read.

I admit that while really enjoying Claptons work, I always appreciated George Harrison just a little bit more than I do E.C.

While I do not believe Clapton is a GOD, I do believe he is an excellent guitarist, and has made his mark in the history of music.

Sure. He just shouldn't switch mediums. But I'd let him jam with me. For a few tunes. You don't want him standing too long these days with all that Alder on his back.
