How many of you who own the '57 Amp have used it for recording?
I'd love to hear some sound clips of this little gem of an amp.
I get mine delivered Wednesday.
So has anyone used one and recorded something we can hear?

Are you talking about the '57 Deluxe?
I bought one about a month ago...it sounds great,I haven't recorded it but you will be pleased.
I did replace the speaker with a Weber alnico,I put Webers in everything.
The Jensen that was in it sounded really good,so it's a matter of personal preference.

It’s not clear from your posting what 57 you purchased. Sounds like it may be the Champ. The following link will take you to some demo recordings using a 57 twin.

www.bandmix.com/beckologist

The tracks have a minimal amount of mixing and mastering. Also, converting them to an MP3 format hurts the quality. They may not do a good job of demonstrating how well the amp records. The guitars(s) were plugged into both channels at the same time using a y-cable (a must on these amps) The treble was set at 9 and the bass at 11 (the mids come up on the amp as the treble and bass are increased). Presence was set at 2. The volume of the normal channel was set slightly higher than the bright channel. The amp was miced with a Shure 57 dynamic at dead center in the middle of the grill (between the two speakers off axis) The tracks break down as follows:

Flip, Flop, Fly:
Amp - 57 twin.
Guitar - 52 hot rod telecaster using the bridge pickup.
Track - Horn type fills and lead break.
In retrospect this was a bad guitar/pickup combination for this track.

Mary Jane’s Last Dance:
Amp - 57 twin.
Guitar - 52 hotrod telecaster using the stock Seymour Duncan neck humbucker.
Track - Second guitar to drop in and also plays the lead parts.

Laid:
Amp - 57 twin.
Guitar - Strat with an Alder body, rosewood fretboard, hot noiseless pickups in the middle position.
Track - The only electric used on this song.

For comparison purposes Sympathy For the Devil:
Amp - New Champ 600.
Guitar - Same Strat as above.
Pedal - Boss SD-1.
Track - Second guitar to drop in and used on lead breaks.

Hope this helps. Congratulations on your new amp! Keep us posted once it arrives. Look forward to hearing some recording.

They are fine amps Beckologist!! I've not tried plugging into both channels at the same time on mine. Although I've heard or read somewhere that, like you say, it's a must. Will have to give it a go one day soon.
Have you switched out the tubes yet that they say causes a change in the sag of the amp, going from the 50's sound to the later day earlier breakup of the tubes? That's something else I've not tried yet.
I've been using it as it came. A great amp for sure!!
Anyway you seemed like the person to ask these question of, hope you don't mind.

Thanks for your post and the information as I'm not much of a modder but the amp was built to specifically do these things ,so I guess I'm staying true to my motto of not modding but using what is meant to be. somewhat!! :)

A link to what I'm asking about in case I'm not asking where you can understand me.

Hey Fhopkins. I have not tried replacing the 12AX7s with 12AY7s. Maybe someday if there is a need for more headroom. Like yourself I am not much of a modder. It's too time consuming to be a modder. I have heard of people removing one of the rectifier tubes to add more sag. In my humble opinion the amp is perfect out of the box.

Definitely get yourself a y-cable. It is the only way to utilize the full frequency range of the amp. The first time I used the y-cable to do channel mixing it was like watching a color tv after only having a black and white tv my whole life  "The Soul of the Tone" goes into quite a bit of detail about how this amp works. Plus the book is a good read. Definitely keep me posted on what you think after trying the y-cable or swapping the tubes.

If you are really happy with the amp and the 12AX7,you might not care too much with the way a 12AY7 changes it,it's not a drastic change but you will notice less gain...and I haven't even looked if somebody is making a new 12AY7 of good quality, but I had some good NOS GE 5 star 12AY7s just sitting in a box,I like them in the '57 Deluxe, but it doesn't have a lot of headroom to start with.

Thanks for the info guys!! I'm definitely going to try out a y-cable! I'm assuming you are plugging into number one input on both channels. Will let you know when I get around to it.

Californiaman, sorry about hijacking your thread my friend! :)

Sorry for the initial confusion about the '57. Also, I've been away and thought I'd check in on this post. I was referring to the 5E3 Deluxe.

I love mine. Can't say enough about it.

At the Neil Young show the other night, he had 4 tweeds: 2 57 Twins, a 57 Champ, and a 57 Deluxe. He would use the 2 Twins together...I'd love to see how that is done. Anybody have any idea of the hookup?

Been looking for the specs. Is this found in Products or was it a special run?

Frank....just a reminder about that great article on modding the '57 Twin which appeared in Premier Guitar. Those interested should be able to find that in that magazines archives on line.

I've got a '57 Deluxe Reissue and I love it, you won't be sad you bought it. Haven't had a chance to record with it yet, but I know it'll sound amazing.
