I wish tone nirvana was as simple as upping a string gauge or two. If that's the case than why aren't we all playing piano wire? More is better, right? :P

I doubt string gauge would have any effect through the Microcube besides giving the OP hand cramps.

the op asked about tone with a set amp, but didnt want to change pickups.
so strings became a obvious choice.
yes changing string size changes tone. so does the type of pick you use.
neither very drastic but its a noticable difference.
what did you suggest?

The guitar you have should sound better than it does but you are very limited by your amp.You will not get a full tone from Roland Micro Cube, although they are great little practice amps that's what they are Practice amps. There have been practice amps in the past such as the old Fender Champs that created great tone but sadly the micro cube doesn't fit in that catagory. You best bet would be to go to another amp as with your present amp you'll never get the tone you're seeking even going through a bank of effects that would cost double the price of a decent amp. I go along with Supah on the string issue,I have used 8-38 strings exclusively since they were made available and I get great tone but having said that I use great amps-Fender,Marshall,Vox,Peavey and Traynor. There are really inexpensive amps out there that produce more than adequate tone and volume from Fender,Vox and Marshall and many have built in modeling and effects, your best bet would be to trade yours in on one of those or sell yours and pick up a used one.

Actually, yes. SRV had better tone than Clapton, Gibbons, King, and Page combined, and a large part of it was the 13s. 8)

amen bro. 13's were very key to his tone. funny thing, i tried a guitar with these. it wasnt pretty. ya gotta work your way up to them. seriously.
its not a grab and go thing. the strength he had in his hands must have been crazy.

hey guys,

thanks for all the replies....
i am unable to change amp at the moment since i find myself at my grandparents farm in the middle of nowhere :) but i will be taking the guitar home to england where i have my Marshall DSL50 stack :):):)
i may make a trip into town to find a higher gauge pair of strings, at the moment i believe the guitar has 9's on it and its got an Ibanez edge III tremolo i believe but i dont have the tremolo arm for it so it doesnt get used but i will fix one one when i get home.

i just play in standard tuning but will try going up to 11 gauge strings and ajust the pickup height, i know the micro cube isent the best of amps but for what i do here at my grandparents its fine and i was able to pick it up for about $30 which was great since i would only use it while im here on holiday. The Ibanez though im taking back with me as i brought my squier strat over the leave here :)

appreciate what others have to say keep leaving your comments!

Larsson
