if you were gonna buy a body (SSS) and neck, where would you buy it?
when buying a neck for a body, what measurements do you need to make sure the neck is the best possible choice for the body you have or buying?

Mighty Mite is the most reasonably priced. Warmoth is pricey but dependable the same with WD Music. I have always wondered about Moses graphite necks but they are very expensive.

MM sells parts only and I think WD is the same, Warmoth will do custom work but there is a charge and for what they charge you could buy a guitar. I looked at the Moses website again and their fee for assembly is around the price of a guitar as well. If you can do the work yourself it is a cool way to go.

this is where I would buy one. I have been researching it and speaking to luthiers and others and the musikraft necks and bodies have a very good reputation. I ordered my Tele body and custom Tele neck from there and they are both perfect. The neck is perfect from the wood to the fret work.

I've ordered once from warmoth and was happy. However they will NOT shoot nitro, only poly.
I've never ordered from Musikraft.

From what I hear from extensive research online, both of these companies have occasional parts that are sub-par. Not usually the case with warmoth, but I've heard a LOT of negative stuff about Musikraft.

However, I've only heard rave reviews for USA Custom Guitars, and I think for my next neck I'm going to go with them.

See I heard the opposite about Warmoth from a few Luthiers I respect. They said that many times the fret work on the Warmoth necks are not finished that well and will often need fret work as soon as you receive the neck. The I asked a few people I know who have put together partscasters and they had A LOT of bad things to say about Warmoth. Could be that the "ready to ship" necks for both companies have issues at times, I am not sure.

Interesting that we both heard differing opinions about the same companies. One thing for sure is I am happy I got lucky with the Musikraft neck I ordered, it is almost a perfect replica of the Hwy 1 neck only with 21 frets. I did get a "custom order" neck though so maybe the put more care into making those, at both companies.

For the record, warmoth tacitly admits to not doing fret work... I was under the assumption that they openly admit not doing a lot of fret work since that kind of work should be done after the guitar has been strung and the wood has settled.

http://www.warmoth.com/bass/necks/Fretwork.aspx

But yes, a warmoth neck's fret edges will be pretty sharp. The idea being that you can always take away more material but you can't put more back on.

Don't get me wrong, I've heard quite a few people who weren't happy with their warmoth parts, it just seemed like a lot more to me were unhappy with musikraft.

But since I've in general heard quite a few things from both of these companies, I'm going with USACG for the next one.

In fact, Warmoth do shoot nitro. Check the finish options for necks, for example:

Years ago I built a Strat using 65 Strat hardware in a walnut body and neck from Double Eagle Guitars in Toronto,ON,Canada.I don't know if they're still in business but their workmanship was sublime and the body and neck contours were identical to an L-series Strat. They also made a onepiece prefinished neck through body and neck with a maple skunk stripe-beautiful but very expensive.BTW the 65 Strat had been wrecked by a restorer who told me he was experienced in such matters-he wasn't-costly lesson.

I don't know how that option on the order form slipped by me. I could have sworn that I emailed them about nitro and that they replied that they didn't do it. Maybe it's more recent that they started...

One thing though, if you look at their page about finishing options, they don't mention one word about nitro. You'd think that'd be a big selling point for people looking to buy vintage-correct specs.
