Hi, I'm a self-taught "cellar-dwellar" musician. I never could be bothered with scales, theory or even keys as a young player and nobody ever told me that I should so I really didn't even know about that kind of stuff. I guess a lot of players from back then were the same. You just played and it either sounded good or bad.
I posted a greeting and a link in the "Let's hear your playing" topic but it seems like it will just get lost in there.
I've been VERY interested in guitars in general for 30+ years and know quite a bit about them. I hope I can add some beneficial input in some of the topics.

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I'm from the Boston,Massachusetts area, lived here my whole life.
"beantown" is a nick-name for Boston, it always puzzled me, I'd say we had a few things a bit more famous than beans, lol.
Come to think of it, in 45 years I don't think I've ever seen one bean factory.

Welcome.

Now if your attitude towards the Red Sox is the same as towards formal musical education, you can be a die hard Yankee fan just like me!

Seriously, I'm glad for you guys that Big Papi is getting out of his slump.

Welcome Beantown. As for theory and scales-hey if you can PLAY anything without knowing that stuff, than why bother with it? As for me, well guitars are new to me and electric guitars especially (been a banjo picker for years) and I never learned scales or theory either. But for some strange reason I find theory and such easier to master on guitar.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and nice comments on my tune there.

Bigmike, I wish I could play anything but I'm really just a blues and classic rock type. When I first started out there wasn't even such a thing as tabs. Reading music was like learning a whole new language and most kids didn't even want take English in school nevermind decipher a bunch of black dots with lines.,lol
Pretty much all there was to do was to play along with your favorite albums until you could get it right..or close enough. So in a way I guess I did learn scales and some theory..just never thought about it in that way.*To be honest I still don't even know what theory is or means.
