So I had my first practice with the new band last night. The other guitarist is a killer on his axe. He's got a tone and the lics to die for. They hired me so he could pursue his new love of playing the keys in the band, and not play guitar. So far I've asked him to show me a couple of lics he does so I can keep the consistancy in what the band hears on the guitar, but I really want him to show me a lot more. Do I ask him to have the patience to show me some cool lics, or do I just keep my mouth shut and my eyes open and steal 'em when I can? He seems to be cool about it, and he says I'm doing a great job so far, but I don't want to be a bug about it until he hates me. How far should I push him? He's in his 50's and he played with the big boys for years until his health took a bad turn.

I would ask, and if he says no just let it go. The only dumb question is the one you did'nt ask. 8)

If it seems like it doesn't bother him then go ahead and ask. Don't annoy him by continuously pestering him, but if you get the opportunity to then do it. I've asked my share of seemingly stupid questions before, most people are cool with it. A few aren't, but oh well. I can learn just as well by watching them.

If he's willing to teach take advantage of the opportunity. Be humble, be appreciative and it should work out fine. When he's ready to stop teaching, accept his decision and give thanks.

Ask him and deal with the answer. If he's a true gent, he'll be more than happy to share and teach you. If not, then he too has something to learn. Good luck.

It doesn't hurt to ask nicely and only once in a while, keeping after him may make him feel like he's giving lessons and should be paid.

sounds like your guitarist is cool, ask him, I think you are going to learn some major riffage Bro.

Yeah, Ask him about some of the licks he was playing when you guys are finished with band practice, get some one on one time, while he's showing you some of his stuff, You can back him up while he lets loose on the keyboard. That way you both are getting some mileage out of the time spent, and you can bounce ideas off each other. 8)

I would ask and accept any any answer. Most good guitarist are willing to teach. Plus I think he should know if he wants to play the keys in the band, he is going to have to give up some trade secrets.

Most guys like being able to teach someone something, it makes them feel like a semi-authority on the subject. When my 11 year old step son (who's quickly getting better than me ha ha) asks me to show him a lick or help him with a song I totally get a kick out of it.

Bandmates can be chums, too. Maybe you have something he would like to know and it may not even involve guitar.

Best of fortune.
