Hey guys,
What would you say is the best guitar for rhythm guitar ala Johnny Marr?
I'm leaning towards a Jag, Mustang, or a Jazzmaster... Any other suggestions?
Also, dosen't have to be Fender... I'm open minded :D

As much as I don't like The Smiths (its Morrissey), I have the ultimate respect for Johnny as a guitar player in all his projects.

I saw Johnny Marr and the Healers a few years back and he played an SG almost all night. Other than that, he played a Tele and a strat. I've seen some clips of him from The Smiths days where he was playing a Rickenbacker 360

Last time I saw him with Modest Mouse, he played a white Jaguar for most of the show, but also a Rickenbacker, Tele, and a 355.

I love The Smiths and Johnny Marrs playing just slays me.I can get a pretty good approximation of the How Soon Is Now sound by using my Tele with both pups on and running it through my Blues Jr. I don't know what he used on the original but the Tele comes very very close.

Marr used an 85 Les Paul Standard on How Soon Is Now

Bought for Meat Is Murder tour, also used on How Soon Is Now?. The Les Paul I used on the second Smiths album is the one I've still got now, the cherry one. I put a retro-fit Bigsby on it. I also put on Seymour Duncans and a coil tap.

I was looking for a harder sound for the Meat Is Murder album, and I tried a few different guitars before coming around to the Les Paul. There are a lot of traditional rock cliches associated with this make of guitar, so I had to work past that. This was used to write Nowhere Fast, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore and I Want The One I Can't Have. I used it to record The Headmaster Ritual.

My favorite Smiths songs are those really jangly ones, so I'd recommend Fenders (your pick of flavour, Strat, Tele, JM...) and Rickenbackers. I know he uses hollow-bodies and SGs from time to time but the Smiths tone is mainly single-coils.
