Need a little help, please. My Epiphone SG-400 played pretty nicely right from the factory, but the intonation sounded a little off to my tone-deaf ears so I took it in for a setup at the shop where I bought it. It came back sounding better on the one string that was bugging me, but it also had a new fret buzz problem that it hadn't had before. I asked the technician about it, and he said it was because I had selected a lighter string gauge (.09's instead of the .10's that were on it when it went in), and the lighter strings require a lighter touch. This was a slip on my part, not deliberate. Anyway, he told me to restring with .10's and see if that corrected the problem. It didn't. I took it back to him and he tweaked it again -- now it's better, but still not where I think it was before. Now I'm wondering about his assertion that lighter strings buzz more than heavier strings, because I just got my Fender Strat, which was shipped with .09's, and it doesn't buzz. Is this technician out to lunch? Should the same gauge of strings buzz on one guitar and not on another -- assuming the neck and action are adjusted similarly? I bought both guitars new, from different shops; the Strat has not been in for a setup yet (and doesn't sound like it needs one right now), unless they did one at the store (not sure); the SG came straight from the factory. Any thoughts?

To be fair, I don't think he could have known what gauge strings were on there to start with. My own fault for not being more careful in selecting the new strings. But I would think a good tech could get the buzz out more completely, especially since there was little to no buzz to start with.

a good tech will know by looking/playing what strings are on it.
yes he should be able to get the buzz out.

I re-strung with .10's before I took it back to be tweaked the second time. Same strings that he took off it when he did the first set-up.

hi there , how's the neck relief and where abouts on the fretboard are you getting the buzz , also what hight are the strings from the top of the 12th fret , to the underside of the strings, i had to do a little fret work to my g400 to get the strings at a nice hight with no buzzing , perhaps you need a fret level done ? hth

The buzz is mostly at the 5th to 7th frets. The frets are level, I checked with a straight edge. I also tried adding a little relief to the neck, and the tech further tweaked the truss rod. I'm not sure about the string height as I don't have the right gauge or ruler to measure -- yet. In any case, the problem is pretty minor, it just doesn't seem to be quite as good as (I thought) it was before. I'm going to try to find some feeler gauges and re-set the action to factory specs.
