I took Karate lessons for over 12 years. Need to start again.
I'm only missing the black belt, but that's not what martial arts are about.

How unfashionably late am I?
Sorry Andy, completely unintentional I assure you.

Trained in Wado-Ryu Karate and Taekwondo both a little. Quickly moved onto WingChun Chuan. It suits my build a lot better. Short legs, long arms and body, upper body strength like popeye on PCP. Basicaly a shaved ape.

Without meaning to contradict Andy, the tale of WingChun's origins that I prefer. Because all these old Chinese stories are part truth, part lie, to make a good myth.

Yim Wing Chun (Singing a song in beautifull springtime), was constant victim of a gang of thugs. One day she approaced a Shaolin nun whom was hiding out in her village. (The temple having been recently ransacked by the army. Putting the date at about 1750AD ish). Exlained to Ng Mui her dilemma and asked Ng Mui to train her in kung fu. The nun had developed a style that was indeed a mix of snake and crane, called Plum Flower Fist. Sorry I forget the original chinese name. Yim Wing Chun found it to be too physicaly demanding for her small frame (not having suffered the gruelling Shaolin lifestyle). So with Ng Mui's guidance, she adapted it to better suit her abilities. Resulting in a style where being short, getting in close and punching straight (no roundhouses or haymakers), results in deadly speed. Whilst guarding the genitalia and loading the hips to punch (much like how a western boxer will drop the knee for a uppercut) through it's stance.
These days I mostly devote myself to exhaustion, drunkeness and the endless persuit of being ultimately passive in both word and action. Not always easy when you look like Mike Tysons punchbag.

In this regard, I hold you in great esteem my friend. Karateka ni sente nashi. 'He who knows does not make the first move'. How could you possibly in your present condition?

Andy when I say ultimately passive. I mean like a complete pacifist. I met a monk once who was said to be such. I personally believe the claim. The guy had no ego at all. His attitude was "I may be bleeding, but their obviously the one with the problem". Very zen minded. Whether that extended to the defence of his own life, I dunno. He claimed as much.
I'd like to be that un-reactionary though.

Howdy!

Well, I think we can safely say this is probably one of the safest forums on the net plenty more Martial guitars than I would have thought!

HA!

I'm quite surprised that this thread got to page 4 before someone mentioned that!

I too am a Marshall Guitarist...

Hi Tim, I trained with a chap just before he left to start teaching Krav Maga. Now that is one seriously hairy martial art. I went to a couple of his classes, where they made me spin around until I was so dizzy I could barely stand, then the rest of the class attacked me. Bloody terrifying! I was very impressed with the stress training. Good stuff... Deadly..but good! :D

+1

The version I posted is the watered down stock origin the organisation I was with tell all the new folks who join up.

Yours is the much more interesting version!

The Temple you mention would have been the Siu Lam Temple that was set on fire by dissident monks that had defected and aided the Manchurian Government in sacking what was left. Ng Mui was one of only Five elders that escaped. Its said that she developed the style to help fight off the younger, stronger dissident monks that had also mastered Siu Lam Kung Fu.

The "new" style was then tweaked again to suit Yim Wing Chun. Apparently Yim Wing Chun then went off to challenge the Top Thug. If she had lost the fight she would have had to marry him. By all accounts she kicked his arse! :D

Did you ever get to have a go with the Bart Cham do?

Lots of fun to had with those! Got to watch your wrists as my set are a bit on the heavy side.

Good stuff folks!

Stay safe.

Andy

I reckon that's pretty much the aim of the game right there folks.

I`m a 3rd Degree Black Belt in a Korean system, Tang Soo Do and got my Black Belt in Korea. I taught in my own club for many years. I studied some Bushido, Ninjitsu, and Kempo JuJitsu. I also taught hand to hand combat to the Green Berets 5th Group during the Viet Nam War. It was good training and an experience I wouldn`t have missed for anything..

I know Judo, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and other Japanese words.

Old American saying: "He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day."

And then at least three of us thought we were being original in making that joke - I now notice, upon reading back. Apologies to guitslinger for plagiarism.

Still, it took me that long to get involved in this thread because in a dyslexic moment I read it as Marital Arts. I have plenty to say on that subject (plenty), but I stayed away because I thought I'd get the thread locked.

Which I would have. 8)

Anyway. I'm a passed master in a little known martial art based upon Pakistani cooking. I'm a black belt at Karachi Chops. I've got that technique licked.

Cheers - C

Indeed Andy...Some great techniques in Krav Maga, and a big part of the training involves getting beat up on and learning to fight through less than optimal situations.

i'm a marshall bassist, but the couple of years of karate doesn't realy coun't towards me being a martial bassist :D my mum usesd to be a 1st don (is that how you spell it?) in Karate and Tai-kwon-do and the equivilant of a blue belt in Kung-fu before she had me does that count?

but anyway, i hope my negotiation skills will suffice. the trick is to praise your enemy without also making yourself look like an easy target. it helps to have a sprinters build
