Hey, how many of you old geezers (like my goodly self) remember Joe Jitsu?

I used to practice Tang Soo Do until about 1996. Participated in some competitions and really enjoyed it. At the time I wasnt spending much time playing the the guitar. I can definitely see how an injury from martial arts could cause problems with playing.

TKD for me. I have a Black Belt (1st degree) but don't have the time to train/teach, therefore progressing further has been difficult.

Sweet! I'm a big fan of the deluxe models and wish I had the funds to pick one up and take it home. if you buy one let us know what you think, especially those new N3 pups! :D

I do enjoy the odd “Power Nap” Mrs Andybighair would say I'm a Master in that respect :D

Good to see more “Martial Guitarists” posting here. Reckon this forum is becoming one of the safest places for musicians on the net!

I've found some pics that I think you'll all like...

And for all you Jiu Jitsu practitioners....

Started out in Shorin-ryu about 40 years ago, then to TKD Chung Do Kwan and Jee Do Kwan for a couple of years. Let it go after entering professional school in order to protect my hands. Have always had a strong interest in Uechi-ryu Karate and just bought George Mattson's new book.....signed. He's been the main man in that system stateside for nearly half a century now. Hope to get into that discipline if I make it to Florida and he's still hanging around. Personally, and to quote Mr. Miyagi, I've always thought that a canvas belt was the one to go for. It's deep, but those who are in it will understand my meaning. Go see the new remake of The Karate Kid. Says it all right there. A bow to you all with great respect.

Utz :!:

Doc

I never wanted to get into the "breaking" part of karate,I figured if I didn't break any bones that was good!
It was mainly self defense and the self control that I was after....I liked the way some of the instructors who had grown up fighting had the confidence that they didn't need to prove anything anymore.
Some of them were really tough guys, and there were some who didn't look the part...so if somebody wanted to "teach them the error of their ways"... they were in for a big surprise.
I learned some really good life lessons from those guys and the training.

Before I stopped, I used to break with a palm heel strike. I never subjected my finger joints to any kind of trauma. I have a friend who teaches math in the NYC school systems. He is a thin, kind of geeky looking, Milquetoast kind of guy whom, to the naked eye, appears an easy mark. He's been in Seido karate in NYC for the past 30 years, and is currently 5th Dan. Richard Chun, who was Master of the Moo Duk Kwan TKA school in NYC many years ago once said:
"A wise karateka never makes the first move" & "When the mind goes forth, withold the hand." "When the hand goes forth, withold the mind.''
I, not too long ago, on the NYC subway system, found myself in a situation which might have accelerated into a real issue. The object of my confrontation was making it clear to me that he was both younger and more able than I. I looked him straight in the eye and, without any anger or hostility in my voice, calmly said: "That does not concern me." Given second thoughts, he ended the matter directly. The best training outcomes are to know that you have nothing to prove, diffuse the matter, and to be able to walk away or, if given no other choice, see to it that your attacker will not have a second chance at you. The first option is always the better.
Doc

Having been trained by some very skilled instructors at Duke Field, Florida and Ft. Benning, Georgia as a young serviceman I was fairly proficient at some of the more common techniques of Asian martial arts. But now -- at my age -- I'll stick to "sheen-guns" and pistols for the confidence they provide in the face of any physical confrontation......
