Howdy!

A Kung Fu salute to my fellow Martial Guitarists!

Image

Thanks for posting people! Lots of similar minded forum users who are clearly not to be messed with! :D

Karate seems to be the popular choice here. Any of you train as “Breakers”?

I have major respect for all types of Martial Arts especially those who dedicate time and effort to condition their bodies like in Muay Thai and certain Karate styles. Bit like how we all condition the ends of our fingers on our fretting hand to the point where we feel no pain even after playing for hours on end!

I too have found it easier to focus on my guitar practice and reckon its had a hand in making me a more dedicated player.

As far as injuries went, I suffered with some pretty nasty ganglions on my wrists which were very hard and took weeks for me to work them out(very crunchy). Haven't had one since I stopped training as much.

Jeebus, i'd recommend Wing Chun as the perfect form of self defence for your wife. If she's up for it, check and see if there are any classes near by.

I was taught that Wing Chun is a 2000 year old Martial Art named after a female nun (Wing Chun means beautiful springtime)who wanted to get out of an arranged marriage and was taught a mixture of Shaolin Crane and Snake Kung Fu styles over a six month period to kick the crap out of her husband to be (which was the only way out, back in the day!) The aim was to create the most efficient form to defend one self regardless of size, strength, skill or gender making it one of the most effective and popular Martial Arts in the world. Its also relatively easy to become a fairly proficient (as far as defending yourself goes) in about six months of training three times a week. Several of the worlds top special forces are trained in Wing Chun for the same reasons.

I always enjoyed the little sayings and stories my Sifu's had as answers to my questions. For those of you who teach, I was one of those students that stayed afterwards asking loads of questions :D

Here's a few of my favourite sayings

“If your fighting to live... it's ok to die!”

“The more you sweat in practice the less you bleed in battle”

“Andy, go home and stop asking me questions” (just kidding all my Sifu's showed me a great deal of patients and understanding)

Enjoy!

Andy (wishes he had some Hai Karate Aftershave....I can only imagine the smell....I bet its pretty manly! ) .

I watch a lot of UFC and MMA, does that count? :) I did manage to get a yellow belt in Karate back when I was like 14 or so but then I wanted to pick a fight with my sensei cuz he pi$$ed me off, but he was much tougher :D so I quit and stuck to street fighting instead.. yeah not too smart at that age!

I have a very limited exprience of Street fighting so i can't comment on that, You were clearly braver than me when I was 14!

I'm personally not a fan of what I call Martial Sports where training is tailored to scoring points against an opponent but I'm pro Self Defence and under that banner pretty much everything fits :D

I do occasionally watch UFC but prefer and enjoy watching boxing. I'm aways amazed at the stamina required to fight for that length of time. I was ready to pass out after about a minute of sparing. But then in Wing Chun, if a fight lasts more than about 5 seconds your not doing it right :D

I don't know about braver, maybe dumber! :D I used to be a huge boxing fan, but watching 5 5 mins rounds of UFC is way more entertaining than boxing :) the 25 mins of MMA requires a lot more stamina than boxing IMO, there's a lot more going on, boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu... these guys are in excellent shape! and not to mention they have to master so may different skills to be competitive.

I totally agree! :D

Those UFC fighters are totally ripped! I bet forum user Deluxe Matt probally is or at least trains with guys who are :D

Wasn't Gracie a UFC champ for a while? If i've got this right the Gracie style dominated the UFC for some time (confirmation need on that)

I believe Royce Gracie introduced Jiu-Jitsu to the UFC, after beating the crap out of everybody :D no one had an idea what just hit 'em! He was taking out some big guys too, all in the same day! I think in the early days of the UFC the first round was 10 mins! Can you imagine that??

I have trained with some really tough guys. They are at a level that few reach. I was always a lot smaller than the MMA guys. I did it for about 12 years. I jacked my lower back up with a big guy (350 Lbs.) way to big for me, It was stupid on my part. I felt bad for the guy because he did not have any good training partners so I rolled with him. He did not intend to hurt me but he crushed 2 disc. L5-S1 and L4-L5. Got one fixed so far. Playing guitar is a lot safer I hope.

Tough break dude.

Yeah, i can confirm that playing guitar is a whole lot safer than trying to throw a 350lb bloke! I know how you feel about the training partner thing. i'd always try to train with as many different people as poss. Some good some bad, all worth the exprience.

I take it you play a deluxe? Strat or tele? Great guitars.

I want to play a deluxe. Had an American deluxe in the early 90's. But like any dumb kid I sold it. Now I play a MIM Strat tweaked a little. I'm really looking at the new HSS deluxe.

Done a bit of Judo for a number of years when I was younger , the few scrapes I did get into surprised even me how much of what you learn kicks in although having been away for a good number of years now I think the only thing to kick in would be my ability to fall without further injuring myself

I have many years knowledge of Kung Po rather than Kung Fu.

I do however know Judo, Karate, Aikido and other Japanese words.

Truth be told, I am a Master of Nemasu Do.

Hey, how many of you old geezers (like my goodly self) remember Joe Jitsu?
