Hello!

Two of my main interests are playing guitar and Martial Arts. I've found they compliment each other rather well.

I've trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu (Wing Tsun or Ving Tsun) and a little bit of Aikido and Chi Chung. I'm not currently practising but still like to run through the forms, work out with my nunchaku and punch the crap out of my wall bag when I can!

I decided to focus on my guitar playing / building a few years back when my wrists and fingers were starting to get injured as the training got more advanced but still miss the classes.

Anyway I was just wondering if there are any other “Martial Guitarists” amongst us?

Enjoy!

Andy

Books are good.

Needs to be a hard back, though I have seen some amazing techniques done with a rolled up guitar mag

Karate here - and I agree, the two do go together. My day starts with about 40 minutes playing guitar and then the same for karate.

I usually train at the dojo 3 times a week and instruct in a couple of other classes. A comment I've seen here on the forums applies - if you want to find out how well you've learned something, teach it to someone else.

Your comment about injuries is a good one. It only takes a moment to do something that can affect your playing for weeks (or worse). But it's definitely improved my concentration and that helps me with learning new things on the guitar. And they're both so much fun! :D

no expert here whatsoever. i've got a few basic self defense vids that i make my wife watch from time to time. good stuff. i also punch a 60 lb bag at work when i get stressed. any good vids out there for beginners who focus on simple self defense? i'd like to have a good, effective defense that is non-lethal.

I used to practice Muay Thai, Kick box, MMA and Wing Chun Kung Fu myself. I lasted in kung fu the longest and it got to a point that I was only teaching but not learning anything new so I quit. Now I just hit the gym three times a week.

One thing I don't understand is why I haven't been able to use the discipline necessary to practice martial arts in my goal to learn the guitar :?

I was in Karate for 5 years and earned my black belt, I then quit and took Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for 2 years, until the studio closed down. I am quite a threat 8)

Well I first stepped into a Boxing gym at 13 and left at 20 with a pro contract offered to me. I continued to run and hit the heavy bag into my 30s when I had my car accident and herniated 3 disc in my back. I am a year away from 50 now and atribute all my hand problems playing the guitar these days to the Boxing side of my life.

Shorin Ryu Karate and Kobudo blue belt. I train twice a week. I'm not that into it, but I figure it's good for me so I keep going. I've been doing it for 2 years.

I trained in Shotokan Karate years ago when I was in my 20s/early30s.
Now at 57 I have arthritis everywhere and couldn't do it if I wanted to... the confidence it gave me was beneficial at the time....but you have to be careful and not think you're a bada**. :) or someone will prove otherwise.
I think martial arts is a good thing.

A buddy of mine who is a 5th Dan black belt instructor used to work on the side as a nightclub doorman.Someone once asked him if he was ever in a fight he said:"One smack and it's all over,I don't call that a fight."
