Come to think of it, both he and Bill Shultz bought underperforming assets from CBS.

Both oversaw turnarounds that returned each brand to the very top of the heap.

Both left a legacy of excellence.

RIP, George. You join Bill in the city at the top of the hill.

We will light a candle for you both.

I heard one player sum up Steinbrenner pretty well he said that George was a great guy, unless you happened to work for him.

He knew how to make money thats for sure! Very little to do with Him having a passion for Baseball. He knew with the way the markets were playing out that he could spend everyone else under eventually. Which they did with the help of the players union. Now the team is worth 1.6 Billion next in line B-Sox worth 800 Mill. but with the Yankees earning almost 500 million a year in profits and almost every other team in ball making less then 200 million no other teams have a chance to flourish. Sure it don't buy you a Ring but it does put the odds in there favor for sure.
Just not a good completive game like Football with the salary cap and Baseball will just continue to decline until changes are made with the union and I don't see that.
Thanks God for though for Americas favorite past time!!!! THE NFL are you ready for some FOOTBALL????

SBLS His passion was in race horses he owned Kinsman stables 800 acres in Florida for breeding which I think was named after a place in Cleveland were his family lived at one time. B Ball team was investment horses were a passion and he wanted that one big winning horse that eluded him.

At least George had the good sense to keep re-hiring Billy Martin.

CBS and its junta tossed Leo, Forrest, Carson, and Randall out like snot-encrusted Kleenex. And FMI took a nose-dive as a direct result.

Well being a New Yorker and Mets fan my whole life, though I do root for the Yanks unless they are playing the Mets, I have to hand it to George. Some guys have him all wrong as he was all about winning and had his heart into that team as much as anyone can. Sure he went nuts and through tantrums but if you were spending over 200 million a year you would want results. The Yanks every year put out a team that is going to go to the playoffs and there hardcore fans are also spoiled rotten.lol I admire the Boss more for what he did off the field ,as he always took care of his ex players even those who messed up numerous times, like Gooden and Strawberry by giving them jobs with the organization. A personality like him does not come around more than maybe once in a lifetime and Big George earned his upcoming plaque.

Devil's advocate checking in:
1) When Steinbrenner bought the Yankees, they were on life support and worth only $8.5M. It is BECAUSE of Steinbrenner that the Yankees are so profitable.
2) Steinbrenner had a very different philosophy than most owners: Put every dollar the team makes back into the franchise. As a sports fan, he should be lauded for that philosophy.
3) Considering how he ran the team, I think it is fair to say that he was VERY passionate about baseball.

I know it's not nice to talk negatively about the deceased...

Hence........................... No comment...

He definitely made the Yankees the dominant team in the league. When I was a kid, the Yankees sucked and it was the Mets that were the good team from NY.
