I just got an email from my jamming buddy and he's getting rid of his 15W Marshall mini stack(Slash,Kerry King?)and following my suggestion to get a 40 W Haze combo. He's more into raunchy Marshall overdriven sounds that's why I recommended Marshall over Fender. The mini stack was more of an impulse buy as he loved the sound of it in the music store not keeping in mind that 15 W wasn't enough for jamming with guys with 50-100 W amps.Anyway I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas,I think that I'm more excited than he is,as much as I love Fender amps Marshalls have the tone that speaks to me and reproduces the sound that I hear in my head.

i've read that small amps produce huge tone especially in the studio. i think billy gibbons used a small amp on a few albums. don't matter, i hope your buddy likes his new amp and ya'll record a number one hit.
i used to think the bigger the better. not so much anymore. my 212 has more punch than my full stack and it's much easier to haul. it makes so much more sense at small gigs and my back thanks me.
just jam it

You got that right, some small amps have huge tone. Many musicians have relied on little Fender Champs,Princetons etc. in the studio.Jimmy Page swore by an old Supro 1-12 amp that was less than 20 W in the studio. I have a 20W Traynor Guitar Mate that has deadly tone and my 50W Marshall JCM800 4210 1-12 combo has killer tone and we all know about the old Voxes like the 60s 4-5 W practice amps and the 1-12 AC15s.

page was also known to mic a pignose amp too.

i have a kid at work who went out and bought a new bass amp.
i told him not to buy anything until we went together.
hes pretty new to playing and has no idea about gear.
so he goes and buys some 300 watt kustom setup.
his theory was he need to be louder than everybody else
so wattage was the way to go. major wattage.
i feel so sorry for the folks that live next to him. nothing like hear somebody who cant play through 300 watts lol.

any ways, my whole theory has been rearranged since i started
to learn the blues style. bigger is NOT better. i would much rather mic a
40watt tube amp than go big. big sounds can come from small amps, theres no question about that. perfect a small tone and you can mic it to be as loud as you will ever want.

back in the 80's we went to see john cougar melloncamp.
this guy and his band were so loud, you had to be there to believe it.
small amps mic'ed everywhere. it was crazy and a new thought for us.
then it wasnt long after we showed up at a ZZtop show.
again they were as loud as they wanted to be but small gear everywhere.

Bass amps are a whole other thing. They do need quite a bit of power. I have no problem drowning out a 100 watt tube amp with a 20 or 30 watt amp. It's all about frequency.

It does have a volume control right? Wouldn't be my first choice for a bass amp. My son plays too and d=made some pretty unwise gear choices. Doesn't play out? That was a bad choice. Is he at least in a band??
