Depends on a number of factors, all very personal to you. What kind of music do you wantto play? Any particular guitar players you like the sound of?
At Any rate, the best advice you will ever hear is to go out and try them yourself. You are the best judge of what you want. Personally, I like the Strat , it seems the more versatile guitar. But again, that's my personal opinion. Some here will tell you the Tele is just as versatile. That may not be much help to you now, but, at the risk of repeating myself, you needs must get thee hence to a music store and play both and then decide.

Play a few. Choose the one that speaks to you.

Play some of each and see which you like best.

In my opinion the Tele is more forgiving than the Strat. A Tele will let you get away with sloppier playing and still sound good. A Strat will let you know IMMEDIETELY when you mess up.

'Feel exactly the opposite of mthorn.

A Strat has more sounds in it and the Tele seems to require better playing.

Draw your ownn conclusion based on trying a bunch.

Take a trip to a well stocked guitar store and try out different kinds. Personally, I like the strat over the tele but then again, Les Pauls are #1 for me! Try em all....

Get one of each :D

There are no rules. Like everyone says, just play a few of each and pick the one that fits your budget and feels most comfortable to you. You can't go wrong with either Strat or Tele.

Keep in mind though that a Strat has more fiddly bits to mess with due to the tremolo bridge (whammy bar), if that matters to you. I wish my first guitar would have been a Tele and not a Strat because I spent so many hours trying to set up my Strat's bridge properly when I could have spent that time practicing. But nowadays there are plenty of books, DVD's, and help on the internet to get you going on a Strat.

The age-old question again makes it's weekly appearance.Welcome to the forum Tnach,as others have said it all depends on what you desire in a guitar, the Strat has a greater tonal range and the Tele has a more pronounced treble response. The necks on both guitars are somewhat different, some prefer one over the other yet to others it doesn't matter. Generally the Tele is used much more for country but is also well suited for rock a la Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. The Strat can cross just about all genres such as rock, blues and even country. There can be a big difference among Strat models and one could sound and feel very different from another, the same goes for Teles.Your best bet is to try out as many as possible and as others have said pick the one that speaks to you, you'll know when you've found the right one(or two).

Taming the wild Telecaster is sort of a rite of passage, you start with the wussified Gibbys that play themselves, then make the big move to a Strat, conquer it (if you can) then jump up to the Tele, in all its countourless brightness.

+1 I started playing at 12, got a Gibson at 16 and played until 29 then a Strat until this year when I finally played a Tele (age 50). Took a while but the transition is just as Miami said.

It depends on what music you play and what sound you like. The Telecaster is very good for the blues while the Stratocaster is more for heavy rock
