Okay, I plan on going to GC to try some guitars. I plan on looking at some fenders, gibsons, and perhaps and epiphone. I'm compiling a list to print out to see what I can try out. I'm looking at a variety of semi and hollow body guitars.

So far, I'd like to look at a Gibson SG, Fender 72 (or just a regular strat), an Epiphone hollowbody.

Although you can't try them out, I recommend looking at these guitars: http://stores.ebay.com/MDolsey?_rdc=1
I recently got a left handed MD Tele 650 Carved Top Semi-Hollow w/3 P-90's and it is an excellent guitar.

That's the only good thing about Guitar Center, you can take just about whatever guitar you want down off the wall and plug in (well some people abuse that priveledge). Don't limit yourself to just the guitars on your list. I suggest trying out as many as you can to get familiar with the similarities and differences of them all.

Reading all the specs on the internet doesn't do the justice of actually going out and playing different guitars and it will help you make a wise decision for your next guitar.

i think you'll dig the epiphone. if i buy another electric guitar, it will be a hollowbody. i don't see alot of local guitarists around here playing hollowbodies. of course, i like to be differnt'. plus, the sound is amazing.
good luck

Oh man. I emailed GC and asked about a few guitars in stock and wanted to play them. I told them that I was interested in looking for a new guitar. Now they're emailing and calling me to set up an 'appointment' to look at them (they're only lower to mid range guitars). I'm going to call them tomorrow and tell them that I'm not going to get one right away, but just to try. I don't want to give the wrong impression or have a misunderstanding.

I got away for a couple of hours on Sunday and made the rounds, Chet. Not a thing to be found at GC, Skip's or Northridge. I was hoping to get an up-close-and-personal look at one of those new Super Sonic 22's but nobody in town has them yet. Frankly, all three shops looked pretty bleak in terms of inventory.

God, I miss the Vox Room!

Try the Gibson Melody Maker or the Epiphone Les Paul Special SC which has P-90 pickups. Both are great sounding guitars and are reasonably priced. The MM is $489.00 or so, while the Epiphone is around $379.99. I've tried both and I want them but my wife will only let me get one.

I asked about a melody maker but they don't have any. That shocked me.

Shocking indeed. The GC's near me never carried the melody maker. I've heard from other people in other parts of the country that their GC's don't either. That's crazy, you would have thought they would sell a boatload of them. Maybe Gibson didn't want the Melody Maker undercutting all of their other guitars?

The Best Buy stores that had an instrument section used to carry the Melody Maker, but stopped over a year ago. They were blowing them out cheap, I should have bought one :( Now the only place that carries the Melody Maker near me is a local mom & pop shop. They're pretty cool, but not $489 worth of cool. I'm looking for a used one.

Anyways, enough with calling up GC...just go there and try out EVEYTHING that you can, if you haven't done so already. Then you can join in on the GC bashing threads :P Have fun!

Hi LVA, while you are looking around, take a look at an Epiphone 56 reissue Les Paul with P-90 pickups. They are fun little guitars and might be in your price range. :)

Look at as many guitars as you can. Choose wisely. Let us know what you decide on. Don't forget the upper models of Squier as well. I am very impressed with the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified series.

Just remember a name does not make a guitar great. Let us know what you decided.

Hi Lady VA if you're going to try out a Gibson SG you should also try out an Epiphone G-400 or the 3 pickup G-400 Custom. My daughter's boyfriend tried my G-400 Custom and liked it more thaan his Gibson SG,a lot of Epi models equal or surpass their Gibson counterparts in quality, sound and playability and of course they are generally well less than half or even one quarter the price.
