Okay, there's fakes of everything out there that's worth big money.
In my other hobbies/or whatever you want to call them,...Civil War artifacts, firearms etc....I have seen some fakes that only experts can figure out.
In a well known local Civil War museum, years ago they had some items in there that were from a Confederate officer,a sword, pistol and some other things.I knew the curator like a brother, and another friend who had worked for the Smithsonian looked at the artifacts and said they were fakes, and pointed out some other swords that he said were fakes,I thought he was full of it...it turned out he was right and the curator had been fooled,by someone he said who had some "dark motives".
Long story short, some fakes are so good that it takes an expert who knows how items were machined for the period they are supposed to be from, the materials that were used and so on.
You don't just pick 'em all out unless you are very experienced and know what to look for....which is the small things that some experts don't make general knowledge because of fakers.
Thing about it is,experienced craftsmen can make exceptional fakes, but they can't make a perfect example that will fool everybody.....but all it takes is one sucker with lots of money.

The best bet is to have the guitar thoroughly checked out as today anyone can get fooled , myself included. They are just making them too good and a Fender is easier to fake than a Gibson.

Perhaps the better question should be... "How can you tell if it's genuine?"
1. Original receipt from authorized Fender dealer with matching serial no.
2. Buy new... Helps Fender out tremendously. They can keep making them.

There is no one way to spot a fake Fender. It depends on the skill of the builder and his knowledge of the instrument. Leo Fender was the Henry Ford of the guitar industry because of his modular production techniques. It is much easier to manufacture a "fake" from aftermarket parts than any other instrument I can think of. It all boils down to the intent of the seller. Is he trying to profit from the Fender reputation or is he just a fan of the design? The honesty and reputation of the seller is his best asset or worst enemy depending on the circumstance.

I think Fender could go a long way in curtailing this problem just by stamping matching serial nos. in the neck and the body before they put them together at that particular work station.

ok its seems that there has been a lot of "fake" questions on here since my short time being here.
i hear tell that theres more fake fenders on the market than fakes of all other companies combind. that should speak volumes about fender guitars.
ok so, we out guitar shopping what are some of the things we need to look out for that the guitar in our hands might be a fake?
what are some of the more well known tell tale signs?

Try and find the "signs" on this one (there are many) :

Interesting story though. :?

That is so cool. Sorry to hijack the thread (been doing this alot lately) but how did you find out how to make your own guitar? I tend to be good with my hands with some stuff so I'd be interested.

well the tuners are suspect for sure....that would be my first thing i would be questioning

never mind.... saw that he says that in the listing

my question is what does he gain by putting this auction up at $5000000? He can't really scam anyone, can he? I mean nobody would spend that money and if they did it would be a Fender fan who would know it's value and want to see it first, so what does he gain?
No offers are being accepted?

Well it's really not "rocket surgery". If you take a Strat completely apart, you'll quickly discovery how it assembles. From there it's just a question of amassing the various parts that comprise the instrument, then putting them together in the correct configuration. As the saying goes, "so easy, even a caveman can do it".

Of course, rendering one of these guitars truly playable usually requires the skills of a capable luthier for fretwork, neck shims, final set-up, and the like.

I would assume its a joke but if I remember correctly it cost money up front to post an auction with a starting price so high. I thought it was based on % of opening bid.... if so that is one expensive and stupid joke.
Hope it is costing him some coin. And he's got a 66 rating at 100%
I just can't figure out why he would be doing it.
