ok its seems that there has been a lot of "fake" questions on here since my short time being here.
i hear tell that theres more fake fenders on the market than fakes of all other companies combind. that should speak volumes about fender guitars.
ok so, we out guitar shopping what are some of the things we need to look out for that the guitar in our hands might be a fake?
what are some of the more well known tell tale signs?

If you just stay away from the guitars that say "Gibson" on the headstock, you will be pretty safe.

Seriously, you can buy any Fender headstock logo that you can imagine. A neck plate with a vintage "L" number or anything else is readily available. I think a decent luthier could fool most people faking an old Fender body, neck, etc. If I was going to buy an expensive vintage Fender, I would send detailed photos to George Gruhn in Nashville and pay for an appraisal. I think it's $50.

I see $300 partscasters on craigslist that don't pretend to be real Fenders. I'll bet a lot of them play and sound just fine. The Fender design is so solid, it can work with aftermarket parts.

If every opportunity you get to play a Fender guitar, you do, you won't get fooled again.

this one i dont believe. theres some nice fakes out there. ive played some seriously nice parts guitars that play almost as sweet at my 50th.

playing might tell you on some of the crappier fakes out there but a experienced builder who builds fakes for profit will put most of them past you. honestly its only a fender because the building its built in. it you took the same guys and put them in another shop the guitars they turn out would be fender fakes but of the same quality as in the other shop.

agreed. yet nobody is so good that a fake cant get slipped past them from time to time. even george gruhn himself wont rely on playing alone to pass judgement. i have 3 headed his way. all 3 have to be taken completely apart and gone over before he will approve any of them.
