Yeah he can be an idiot but he can play guitar.

Clapton must think so too or wouldn't have invited him to Crossroads. I don't think Clapton cares if teenage girls show up to his concerts anymore...
Well maybe a little but..

Clapton sees Mayer as a way to sell tickets. Yeah he's a tool, but he's popular. It's all about selling tickets and making money for the rehab center. I never found Mayer all that good or original even before he started with the 8th grade humor.

all about adding more people in the seats and appealing to a younger audience to maximize profits. Otherwise Clapton would replace some of them other artists along with Mayer with the 100's of more talented blues players you can only find by scouring open mic nights, dive bars and small pubs all over the country. I mean, realistically, it's not hard to deduce that Mayer despite being a "big name" artist was one of the bottom 5 guitarists at the show so far as skill. Of course that is all a matter of opinion and after all, he is better than Sheryl Crow.

All you guys bagging on John Mayer again are just jealous. He plays guitar better than you, he's rich, and he is getting laid a lot more than any of you.

And do you really think Clapton invited him to sell more tickets? Right that's laughable. If Clapton played by himself he would sell out the entire venue. I don't think he needs to have Mayer on the bill to sell more tickets.

And do you think for one moment guys with the skills and integrity of Clapton, Jeff Beck. Buddy Guy and Jimmie Vaughn would set foot on a stage with John Mayer if they didn't believe that he is a very good musician?

Carlos Santana is not my cup of tea but I would never be so ignorant to claim that he is not a good musician or a good guitarist.

All of you Mayer haters must be pretty pathetic if you spend time bagging on the guy on the fender forum.

 It's pretty ignorant to believe it doesn't all revolve around money. The Crossroads guitar festival is a huge fundraiser for a rehab. They would invite Mojo Nixon if he had a big enough draw. I've backed some pretty great Bluesmen in my time, and Mayer's not anywhere close to the real deal.

Joe Bonamassa on the other hand, he's a talented original player.

It's not just Mayer's playing, his vocals are a joke too.

Now Joe Bonamassa, he a real talent.

 What's ignorant is the fact that anyone really thinks that Clapton invited John Mayer to sell tickets. Again, if Clapton played by himself he would sell out the entire venue.

And while Joe Bonamassa is a talented musician trying to prove he is better than Mayer, Santana, Guy, Page, Beck, or any other great guitarist is a fools game.

Music is subjective just like any other art form. Great some of you don't like John Mayer. Got it. But don't fool yourself into thinking that John Mayer is not a good guitarist just because you don't like him. I may not like Santana but just because I don't like him doesn't mean he is not a good guitarist. Oh and by the way, Otis is our leader!!!

this thread spun on the word ignorant, look people, I was still digging on Duane Eddy and Link Wray then digging on George Harrison and so it goes until today each generation sounds different the songs are theirs when they play them you may say not the blues but then I say don't get me started from the 1s mentioned to Jimi Eric Jimmy to Joe Johnny Joe to Tommy Pete Tommy and some liked it all some may have missed parts Mr Mayer is playing it his way and if you've been around awhile you can see he is attracting his age groups ears, blues lovers love the blues, don't miss out because your ears may be a little older or younger, play along if it will help I'm sure youtube wouldn't mind.

 It's an opinion, get over it. I don't like cooked spinach either but I don't feel the need to go into details. Nothing I say should effect the fact you like him. The fact is, I know better players IMO, who are happy not being in the spotlight and are humble about how they play. He went from somebody who wrote cheesy pop great selling love songs to Mr. Blues. Great I'll stop before the personal attacks start. Flame suit on.

I should know better because all the Mayer posts wind up this way.

Sounds like a nerve has been touched here.... look, he has talent but there are dozens of musicians out there with more talent in their pinkys than John Mayer will ever have. They just aren't more known ... perhaps on purpose. He grimaces, slobbers over the mike, sounds like he's gargling when singing and writes light-weight pop tunes for the girls to ooh and ahh about. But thats about it. I don't hate him... just don't care for him.
