Here's my take on it, using Fender as an example. There's no way that any vendor is going to inventory the entire line. A senior buyer will select an array of instruments felt to be most in demand by what they consider to be the the bulk of their market in a particular location, and this will likely include most of the price points. GC maintains a Platinum Room in select locations where all the really high end gear is sequestered. Some hanging on the walls and most conveniently locked in glass cases. Or, you'll also find the higher priced gear high up on the wall where the weekend headbangers can't reach them, beat them to crap, swipe the whammy bars and tips from the selector switches and who knows what else. I've known Sam Ash to tell me that they'll order a guitar for me to audition and I have no obligation to purchase it. They assume they'll sell it to someone. GC will not order a guitar for you until you've either paid for it or downpaid something. You have 30 days to love it or return it. Now it's really used but they'll probably throw it on the wall and sell it new. That's why I buy nothing really important off the wall any longer. It has to come to me, carton unopened. Locations vary, and not everyone has access to variety. I am told, by someone on this Forum a serious collector, who spends serious money on guitars, that they have no qualms shopping price online or by phone with some of the major players like Dave's, The Music Zoo, and Wildwood for example, and seeking the best price they can get. Extremely satisfied has been the general rule.

Still makes me sad though. I really like to try out guitars before buying to see if they feel right. They're not even high end guitars. They're more low to mid range which shocked me.
