I can't help but notice that all the people at my high school mostly listen to rap, personally i can't stand the stuff. And when i finally find someone who says they like rock it turns out they're into that scream-o stuff. which don't really enjoy. I guess this is really just a place to talk about what everybody listens to/plays and why. cause i'm really trying to find some new bands to listen to.

i know what you mean.... it is personal preference, but it some of today's music seems so rediculous... i don't want to sound elitist or anything, but if you look at lyrics to songs like "soulja boy" they are so bad..... the same with screamo, i don't know how you can enjoy listening to screaming for a whole song, but again, everyone is different, i guess we all have to deal with everyone else's musical taste

I wonder what the next big thing will be. No one seems to be a big fan of Alt Rock anymore and Rap/HipHop is suffering declining CD sales at twice the rate of other genres. R&B is still kinda popular. Indie is big, but it isn't a genre, it's an employment situation.

So what's next? :?

I wrote a blog entry about this issue not too long ago. It's a little scary that music is devolving.

^ i've seen that blog as well.... its true in most points i think

music really is declining to where many people who have little musical talent can be successful.... most rap on the radio is a beat someone else makes, and they basically talk over it about vulgar things in most cases... there are a few hip hop artists i like, but most of them actually convey a message through somewhat decent music

and now everyone and their brother wants to play guitar with the popularity of guitar hero and such... thats not bad, but many people only learn power chords and such, which they think is good because so many bands today only use those... i'm not saying i dont enjoy any songs with power chords, but they arent exactly promoting the evolution of guitar playing and music in general

This is a subject I really feel strongly about. While parts of the music industry are doing very well such as the concert biz, the record business is not and there are many reasons for it. I was turned on to a site called "Before the Music Dies" by someone else on this forum. If you haven't checked it out, here is the link.

http://www.beforethemusicdies.com/

There is a series of short videos that are very interesting. My favorite was the one where they use a 17 year old model to show how she can be turned into a pop star.

Alex Lifeson called it a Move Towards Mediocrity. In My Opinion it's entirely the fualt of the Record Companies. It seems they are driven by Demographics and Stock Holder Analyses, not the reaction of audiences. If a band doesn't Break the top 40 with their first album, they're abandoned for what might be next because the companies Stock Futures look brighter with a New Band coming out at the begining of next Fiscal Quarter.

yeah, I know what you mean. I think that people are really affected by the music that they listen to, weather that's in a good or bad way. I just can't stand all that screaming. It drives me crazy! I can probably stand about 1/2 song or so!! lol Which, I guess, is pretty wierd for someone my age.... I'm a big fan of contemperary Christian artists. Some are kinda border line, like Relient K, Switchfoot, Hawk Nelson... Those are my fav's! Also, Superchic[k] and Casting Crowns. I really like them cause the message that they send is really REALLY good!!!!!!
Country's cool too!!!! I love new country!!! Can't stand the old stuff much tho...

This is really fascinating to read! I don't know the ages of most of you, but I've been around since before Leo and Les started making guitars. This discussion of the "decline of music" and bad lyrics, just noise, etc, etc. has gone on since Beethoven and Mozart! Music is alive and like language, it changes. The change is what keeps it alive. Most music is just an evelution from a previous form (or perhaps a REVOLUTION against a previous form). There has never been, and I hope there never is, one form of music that appeals to all tastes----that is truly a scary thought! Personally, I don't worry about what everyone else is listening to or what is the hot "sound" now. I just love music (many types) and , for me, the guitar is the ultimate instrument to express this. I started out playing rock n roll back in the late '50s, moved to folk music in the mid 60s and recently got very interested in blues. Play what YOU like and hope that others enjoy it. If they do, that's wonderful, and if they don't, that's OK. The "next thing" always came about when somebody kept at something they liked until others caught up to them! Just love what you play and let the chips fall as they will! 8)

I think there is a lot of great music around today, as much as yesteryear. People just forget all the crap that was around back then too. We only ever remember the good stuff.

You just have to look past all the pop and RnB crap on the radio to find it :)

crazyunclebill speaks truth.

Music isn't "declining," "devolving," or any of the pejoratives you guys are applying to it. What you mean to say is this:

"Pop music is changing from the pop music that I liked when I was a kid."

You shoulda heard what they said about The Beatles. Or the big bands. Or Stravinsky.

like many of you who posted, i feel very strongly about my music too. let's go more into "rock" shall we?

i especially can't stand mainstream "rock" nowadays for the following reasons:

1. guitarists aren't as good,
2. vocalists can hardly ever sing like the rockers of the 70s and 80s (no tonal variation. bad, nasal and whiny vocals in my opinion)
3. music is repetitive and doesn't have that "OOMPH" of the music of those days.
4. well, for me, i can't find a single song that makes me go "wow im going to listen to this 20 years from now"

real hard rock and classic heavy metal is very much dead in my opinion. and it angers and saddens me.

i also would like to point out that i am not in my 40s or 50s - i'm 17 going on 18. and of the 94 songs in my walkman phone, you won't find any song the average 18 year old today might have on his phone. you'd think the phone belonged to someone who was born in the 1980s. i have most iron maiden, guns n' roses, nirvana, scorpions, ac/dc and some system of a down songs in my phone. there's nothing like the old songs. and i swear by it.

by the way i did read what crazyuncle bill had to say, and though i agree, i feel as though the quality of the music i listen to (rock) hasn't only been changing, but also declining and becoming a joke, and i have many friends who feel the same. which is why i pointed all of this out. no disrespect to someone who was around since before Mr Fender was making guitars. heh.

i'm just expressing my opinion, and i also would like to hear what other 70s-80s rockers have to say.

cheers!

Pretty much everything I hear today is directly recycled almost note-for-note from a post-1950 genre. In other words, it's copycat music, nothing new, boring, lifted from a source who did it much better when it was fresh and ORIGINAL.

And what's amazing is, Gen Z or Gen Tech or whatever it's called could care less. It literally doesn't bother anybody that Band X, Y or Z sounds exactly like some corporate rock crap from the 80's or 90's or even 70's. Apparently the response is, "So what? Why should I care, it's cool. That's just stuff my parents listened to."

There really doesn't seem to be any negative aspersions cast on copycat music today. Whereas back in the old daze that was considered a "rip off" and a mortal sin to borrow and steal your sound. Even the public wouldn't stand for it. Originality counted for something. Today it's like...Who cares? We are Borg. If we say it's cool and new, it just is. Don't tell us about anything before 1990, if it happened before I was born, it doesn't count.

To me, that is very shallow and shows the lack of integrity, degradation and search for excellence in the generational music culture creep. America is Devo for sure. Copy and paste culture rules.
