This weekend will be the last weekend I have to endure our egotistical lead singer and his room clearing originals.
Everyone here on the forum told me to leave something I didn't believe in and I finally have. I'm going with a band that plays out 3 times a month, same pay as I'm making now, and it's all local work-no more traveling 50+ miles to get to a gig, and getting home the next morning. No more listening to the lead singer telling everyone how hard he works, and that he's so tired, and never has time for his "babies". To hear him talk, he does it all. No more of him getting drunk and letting anyone get up and sing with us; no more having to hear him complain about how much money he has to spend on the band, and that he doesn't make a dime, and on and on. The band had been together for almost 7 years, and using basically the same songlist. I've worked with this lead singer almost 10 years, and we started out as friends with mutual respect for each other, and since he's got his cd of "originals", it's turned into employer/employee relationship. The guy has talent, but more issues than talent. He'd be better off doing the coffee shop single act.
Thanks everyone for opening my eyes and helping me move on.

That's to hear.

On a related note I see that you are in Eastern Iowa, does your band ever make it to the Waterloo area?

I hope all works out. You have to be happy or at least able to tolerate with your bandmates.

Good for you! I can empathize with you. Ego's seem to get inthe way of a lot of bands. I left a band that I played in for five years due to the ego of our drummer. It was really too bad, because despite the drummer the rest of the band was really fun to be around. The drummer and I started out as friends as well, but after working with a "Friend" for the five years, I just could'nt take his primadonna attitude anymore, and quit. The band later kicked him out six months later. I then was in another band, and the singer was the same as what you described, except he would tell all the members of the band "He was gonig to teach everyone how to be successful in the music idustry." Yeah? Thats why he never was for the prior ten years.-lol. Subsequently, the drummer and other guitar player quit after being in the band for that prior ten years. Then the whole thing imploded. What a lesson in peoples personalities.

Good luck with your new band,it will certainly be free of all the hastle.Your "friend" is most likely heading for the "lounge lizard"circuit.

You'll probably be happier now that you made this decision...Besides, just because it doesn't work out now doesn't mean it won't somewhere down the road. Maybe once this person gets around people who are not so accommodating, he may end up being a decent person to work with in the future...

Hey masterhacker, you did all the right moves. You gave the guy a few chances and he didn't bite, so you had to move on. With only one life to live, there is no place to fool around like that. This forum is like a think tank and a problem solver but only you could make the decision to move on. Good luck with your next projects. :)

I'm so glad to hear it---music is supposed to be enjoyable, band members are supposed to support one another and push one another to greater heights, and if you ever stop enjoying the overall experience (we all have a bad gig here and there), you should stop playing with those individuals.

I hope your new band works out better! 8)
