If your there to try out a guitar play what you play your not there for anyones approval. Ive been listening to Stairway to Heaven since it came out a still love it. I play the whole thing from start to finish and enjoy the heck out of it. I don,t care if anyone else is tired of it I play for me and no one else. I might go play it now.

Yes, BUT how much more Brilliant would have been is Jimmy Page was playing rhythm and Eric Clapton had still with them doing the lead?

I don't mind Stairway, but I think there other more intriguing Zeppelin songs to be heard.

Page can not be replicated. It doesn't matter how many people try, in the end they're all going to come up short. Even if you do get Stairway down, you're still not Jimmy Page.

For me the one song I can't stand to listen to anymore is Free Bird.....I've heard it a gazillion times...and there was always somebody yelling out Free Bird!
Reminds me of the time I read where Frank Zappa said they were playing in Germany I think it was,and some guy yelled out in broken English,"Whippin' Post"....just like the guy you hear on the ABB's Fillmore East album...Zappa said "uh,we don't do that",and then found out later a member of his band could sing it well,so he started playing the song in concerts.
I never heard his version....but I can only imagine. 8)

The problem is unless your band is really tight and everyone is capable, it can be a sonic nightmare. For every one great cover of Stairway I've heard, I've heard literally hundreds that were sonic abortions. I've heard really bad covers in hundreds of clubs since it's inception.

The good thing is in a club situation, most of the patrons are trashed and really can't tell the difference.

In the guitar store I noodle my own stuff especially important if I am buying some gear. I want to hear clearly how it all sounds without worrying to play some piece of music accurately.

I see guys sweating the cover piece (the one most likely mentioned in previous posts) probably just killing time and gear.

What I noticed is that the women/girls would shop in the music store the same way men/boys are shopping in the clothes store. Get the thing you want in and out in 5 min. No hanging around and wasting time. 8)

If you wander the acoustic section in the shops here all you hear is a certain Pink Floyd song, or at least the beginning of it over and over and over.

I like Pink Floyd, just wish people would learn more than the first few opening bars

That or Ironing Man.

I've also heard some pretty lame attempts-- by guys who weren't near as good as they thought they were-at Van Halen's Eruption and then looking around to see how many people they "wowed" by it.That's good for a few giggles.Of course a lot of these self absorbed "hotshots" always look around expecting jaws to drop after they play some of their dazzling fretboard pyrotechnics and usually end up getting sardonic grins.

every shop has that guy or 5 just like him. i pay them no attention.

I like to keep a pair of boxers in my pocket to toss on the headstock of the guitar they're trying out and a sharpie and ask for their autograph with my jaw dropped and salivating like Pavlov's poodle.
