Will it ever be OK to play Stairway to heaven? What about in a guitar store? Man, I hope so, I got really good at that song. What other songs are blacklisted? I'm thinking Master of Puppets will soon if it's not already.
Think I'll go to guitar center and crank up some stairway! LOL

What is wrong with playing Stairway to Heaven? It's an eight minute song, everyone seems to play the first six minutes plus easy enough but the last 2 1/2 minutes

because its the most over played, boring song in history of rock.
how about just going to a music store and playing your own stuff,
something that doesnt have a direct tag to it?

Most don't play is from start to end as good as they think!!!!Especially the parts were he moves up to the 12 string neck on his guitar.

agreed. i refuse to play it. i bet i havent played it in 20 plus yrs.
man ya just get tired of hearing the damn song.
every radio station wears it out. then you walk into a music store and almost a given that theres some snot nose in there giving the song his best
all the while butchering it to death.
then when your out playing and taking a few requests to get some one on one with the listeners, theres always that one drunk,
"hey man, can you guys play......". dear Lord enough already.
its been beat to death for dang near 30 yrs.

If you actually "shopping" for a equipment, play whatever you want. You need to hear what the stuff sounds like together. Preferably play something you can play with minimal mistakes. My local shop has a soundproof booth the put you in when you try something out. If you are just killing time in the store, I'd say just look and don't touch. the more the guitars are played increases the chance of damage. These places are there to make money, if guys go in all the time playing and scratching up the guitars it costs them money.

I like Stairway to Heaven, largely in part to the fact that for me it's a relatively new song that I haven't heard a million times. But so many people play it that it's become a cliche.

I used to play Boston's "More Than a Feeling" when I went to try out gear a couple of years ago. Everyone knows it but it's not as overplayed as Iron Man, Stairway or Smoke on the Water. What I do now is just play songs I wrote. No one knows them or knows how they're supposed to sound so it's all good. :D

I've also heard some pretty lame attempts-- by guys who weren't near as good as they thought they were-at Van Halen's Eruption and then looking around to see how many people they "wowed" by it.That's good for a few giggles.Of course a lot of these self absorbed "hotshots" always look around expecting jaws to drop after they play some of their dazzling fretboard pyrotechnics and usually end up getting sardonic grins.

I don't want to sound snooty..LOL but I only play my stuff. I don't play covers very often mainly original stuff so I play what I write...no one gets mad and well...it makes me happy to hear how my gear will sound.

man you got that right. theres this one GC i got to on occation.
i mean once every couple months type of thing.
well i noticed this kid in there the last time i was there. i mentioned him to my girlfriend. shes like thats the kid that was in here the last time we were here. she was right lol. funny thing was last time we saw him we were talking about him being there the last time we were in. lol
3 visits in a row, weeks if not a month or so apart, theres the same kid.
dear Lord. his parents must drop him off there and go shopping or something. hell maybe his dad traded him in on a solid strat or something who knows. thats just crazy right there. i would have to pull the plug on the guy ya know. its gets to a point that your really not being productive for business so ya gotta go.

every shop has that guy or 5 just like him. i pay them no attention.

i was at the last GC best blues thing a few weeks ago.
this chic was really playing good ya know. not the best but she COULD have been proud of her attempts. just in the middle of her run she
make some strang face like shes on stage and puts the guitar behind her head and finishes up her run. i just shook my head. unbelievable. her
she was doing great. really had folks attention. then she ruins herself trying to showboat. everybody knew it too. not the right time and not the right place. she should have been more focused on what she was doing and not worried about trying to look cool.

oh believe, im not knocking playing other folks stuff. you grow and learn
when you do so. theres just a time and place for it.
maybe a quick lick hear and there so demo a poduct, but i wont rip through a whole song in a shop.

There's a reason Stairway is, or at least was, the most overplayed song you can think of. It is a brilliant masterpiece.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
