Try some baking soda mixed with some distilled water. The corrosion from the dead batteries is acid. The baking soda should equalize the acid. The only problem may be if the corrosive pitting ate into the contacts enough it may not carry the signal anymore. Or it may break the springs off, springs being so thin the acid eats in far enough for that.

+1 I work with a different type of battery(telecom) but we use that same formula to neutralize acid..
