ok i have a question we all have been through at least once.
ok so yrs ago i stored a device that takes batteries.
AA to be exact. so i open up the CD player to put batteries in and forgot that i left some in a long time ago.
well upon removing the old ones i see down in that around the spring the
green stuff has formed. the "green stuff" has ruined many of items over the yrs for me lol.
ok, is there any way to clean this crap up or am i screwed?
i'll have to work with Q tips cause the batteries slide down into a hole.

Coke generally takes corrosion off, but do not recommend it for a CD player. Q-tips and patience.

If you are not going to use an item for a while, take the batteries out. The green is killer stuff.

Spray some electrical contact cleaner into the lid or a pill bottle or film container and use Q-Tips dipped in the contact cleaner to swab out the gunk. Try to use a fresh Q-Tip for each swab so as not to contaminate the contact cleaner in the film container by re-dipping.

Electrical contact cleaner can be found in any auto parts store, hardware store, Home Depot, etc.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I do. First, don't use vinegar - regardless what tips you might find on the internet. That would be using a corrosive acid to clean up after acid corrosion. Not smart.

And don't use water either. That will reactivate the battery acid crystals and they will resume their corrosive work.

Personally, I wouldn't use any substance for this issue, though if you feel you must then contact cleaner, as suggested above, would be the one.

Best of all is to tackle this issue mechanically. Use little strips of wet-and-dry paper (used dry) to just sand away the corrosion and clean up the spots where new batteries will make contact. Or use a fingernail emery board. Or a diamond nail file. Or a small brass wire brush. Or something like that.

And be sure to clean any dust out of there so that it can't find its way further into the innards where atmospheric humidity might reactivate it and cause more damage.

Good luck - C

I bet you can reach in there with an emery board. And which guitarist doesn't have some of those kicking around?

Whatever: not vinegar!

Cheers - C
