Are you looking for a Bass or a 6 string?

I'm sure everyone here will have a ton of good opinions, there's a lot of knowledge here.

My suggestion would be to get a moderately priced Fender Strat. If you are new to 6 strings all together it will give you some versatility, you could even get one with an extra humbucker. The made in mexico strats and tele's are actually pretty good quality, my tele is a mexi and I love it and I didn't have to pay 1000 bucks for it. (not to say that I don't want one of those).

Is there a particular style of music you gravitate to?

If you're going for rock/punk I'd suggest a Strat (HSS model), Tele (Standard, Deluxe, Custom, etc.. all would be good) or Jaguar HH but that's just my 2 cents worth

i think the frist thing you need to establish with us is how much are you willing to pay? then that will give us something to work off of.

i got my mexi strat (used) for $325... LOVE IT!!
my mex tele was given to me by my wife's dad... LOVE THAT TOO!

i'd almost lean toward the telecaster. the bridge pickup is very bright and cuts right through, and the neck pickup is nice and chunky for hammering out those power chords.

the strat is a bit more versatile with the 5 position switch, and of the two guitars, i think it'll get the most votes... but i'm casting mine for the telecruncher.

i think most here would agree that as far as quality of sound goes the mexican-made fenders are well worth the money.

try them both.

look at the american special hss strats.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Fend ... 1502369.gc

These would be great for the type of music you like and fits right in your price range.

here is the description:

"The Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster features an alder body with gloss urethane finish, a 9.5" radius maple neck with a modern C profile, and a rosewood fingerboard fitted with 22 jumbo frets. You'll get lots of gain and tones galore from Texas Special middle and neck pickups, and an Atomic humbucking bridge pickup while the Greasebucket tone circuit rolls off the highs without adding bass. Other details on this electric guitar include a vintage-style synchronized tremolo, black pickup covers and pickguard, chrome hardware, and a large '70s-style headstock and decal. A polishing cloth and gig bag come with your Fender American Special Strat."

+1 on the American Special. Get the Sunburst, it looks really nice. Just my 2 cents. Good luck 8)

For a new guitar and a $800 budget...either an American Special or the Highway 1 for the music you want to play. To save some money you could do a Lonestar or Deluxe Stratocaster. There is the Telecaster Classic Player (back up to your higher end budget).

On the used market, you can get a used American Standard for that kind of money.

How serious are you about playing the 6 string? I personally would go for a cheaper model like the MIM Standard, Lonestar, or Deluxe until I knew for sure if I was staying with either the 6 or 4 string guitar.

Play as many models as you can and let your ands and ears find you the guitar for you. Let us know what you decide.
