Between nominating Madonna to go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and reading comments about guitarists ( who's the greatest , etc. ) I feel there's alot of people who are just spouting well known names. Outside of Paul McCartney, the most talented musician rock has produced is ..........

.................... RORY GALLAGHER ........................................!!

Born in Ireland in 1948, Rory Gallagher had the original power trio in 1965 - Taste ... before Hendrix and Cream. His group opened for Cream on their farewell concert in 1968 at the Royal Albert Hall. Gallagher had just turned 20 years old !!! Throughout his career, Rory Gallagher wrote,
sang and produced the bulk of his material. He was in the very, very, very top echelon of guitarists playing VIRTUOSO electric, acoustic and slide guitar. He was also a superb harmonica player, along with mandolin, sitar and saxophone. There is not a single other guitarist of that caliber who can make that claim..... not Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Van Halen, NOBODY !!!!
He played in northern Ireland in the 1970's when it was very dangerous to do so. Bombings and shootings were real possibilites then. The Stones didn't go there, the Who didn't, Clapton didn't ...... NOBODY !!!!!!! Gallagher was Melody Makers top musician in 1972 beating out Clapton, Beck and all the others. His albums were MONSTER sellers in Europe - his " Live in Europe" was one of the top selling live albums ever recorded. He had a movie and an album " Irish Tour '74 " out at the same time. Very few artists have ever done that. He was asked to play at the Band's " Last Waltz " event but couldn't. He jammed with the Rolling Stones ( who stole the riff for " Miss You " ) and would have made them a 1000% better group. Keith Richards was in a chemical daze and Gallagher had to go to Japan. He was the first artist to play live for people living in Communist countries at the Rockpalast festivals in the 70's. Muddy Waters asked Rory to play on his London Sessions which was a high honor for any musician. Above all ........ Rory Gallagher NEVER sold out his music for anyone or anything. Not many people in life - much less musicians- can say that !!!! Thats why nominating someone like Madonna and there's others before her is just a stupid mindless JOKE ..... BOYCOTT the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !!!!!!!

It's called a Hall of FAME: you don't think Madonna is more famous than Rory Gallagher?

You should subscribe to a newspaper.

Or better yet, relax. :D The purpose of the Hall isn't to satisfy the individual hero-worship of every rock musician in the land: it's to bring people to Cleveland to spend money.

Excellent first post baliman! You'll find some RG fans here, me among 'em.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Rory a couple times at St. Louis shows, and got to share the Craic over some beers with one of the most talented, humble, underrated, genuine, and just plain decent guys you'd hope to meet in rock&roll. What a great volume of honest and unpretensious music he left us with. Cheers to you Rory!

I'll use this opportunity to again bring up my previous request to the crew at Fender about putting a Rory Gallagher profile up on the Artist section of this very site. NO mention of Rory anywhere besides the product listings.

Happy Friday to all...

n.

Maybe he doesn't yet fit the criteria.

From the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame website:
"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 500 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year."

You're right Baliman1, it's a shame Rory does not receive more recognition and certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame - if it were up to me. Unfortunately Rory never recived the attention here in the States as he did in Europe. However it's great to see people keeping his name alive and arguing his case.

Anybody not familliar with Rory should go to YouTube and check out some of his perfomances. You'll be amazed.

I don't pay attention to who's in or not.

I agree that Rory ought to be in, however.

Hey, Stevie Ray didn't make it in either! (But it was only his first year of eligibility...)

"Outside of Paul McCartney, the most talented musician rock has produced is .......... "

Frank Zappa. His guitar virtuosity was the least of his genius.
