What string gauge do acoustics normally come with stock? I'm restringing my Mom's acoustic for the first time in years and at the time we bought it for her we didn't know anything about guitars, much less about string gauges.

Nowadays, they come with 10s for the most part.

Normally mediums which is somewhere between 10 -11 for the high e and goes up in guage to about a 54 on the low e (give or take a few mcm)

I use 10's too, mediums are widely used for bluegrass pickin'.

It depends on what the guitar is going to be used for. I play ballads on my mine mainly and play with 11's on it. Very nice tone.

I use 10-46 on all my acoustics with a .017 wound G (D'Addario makes such a set)they are bright and responsive and easy on the hands.Last year my brother in law bought my sister a new Epiphone acoustic and the strings that it came were very hard for her to learn on,I put on a set of 10-46 and she had no problem.

So 10-11 seems to be the general range. I have to take it into the shop for a replacement bridge pin anyway, so I'll measure to know for sure what gauge it is when I get there. Thanks everyone! :)

.011's on the Malibu. I tried .010's and (this is about the only time you'll see me state that string size made a difference to sound.) it sounded crap with .010's on it.

What size (body) acoustic is it? As far as I can gather bigger bodied acoustics can have thinner strings without losing too much bass, though they will all lose mids.

Your mom may well prefer light strings, especialy if she doesn't play much.

It's an Ibanez AE300. I guess it would be considered a Dreadnought. It's definitely going to have lighter strings than what I'd normally use, because my Mom doesn't play often and usually just plays chords.

Well a big ole dread should be fine with a light gauge. You got a big soundbox to help compensate for the smaller strings. It's when you start getting into parlour sizes that you really notice the bass needs bolstering with a thicker bit of rope.

Gotta tell ya, having a acoustic at hand has done wonders for me, especialy in composition. If something sounds good on acoustic, it's 90% a winner on electric. Before Febuary all I ever owned was electric guitars cept for a Ovation I was given by a worship leader. You really play differently on acoustic, you have to, to make the sound up/bigger.

You know when it sounds good on a acoustic, your gonna have to reign it back when you play it on electric

I'm about to order a Fender Sonoran SCE. Looks like these guitars come with 12-52...

off topic but i really agree with mr. nik. my acoustic is always close by. i pick it up everyday and after a workout on it, i seem to fly on the electric.
i use medium gauge strings.

All of these responses saying 10's and 11's are both Medium and stock OEM issue are baffling to me. I have never run into any acoustic guitar in any store that was not strung with 12's. 12's are standard equipment on new guitars. 12's are also "Light' guage. Every brand of strings I've ever seen lists 12's as Light and 10's as Extra-Light.

I use 11's on my acoustics which is considered "Custom-Light".
