I guess the two do go together.

um............lost me on this one bro.

Nevin brought up Andrea Segovia as someone who had no blues influence.

I was showing that Robbie Kreiger who was a classically trained Spanish guitarist could and did also play blues licks as well, and in this song merged them.

The one thing that brings these two forms together is that them both must be played with soul a feeling.

Nevin, just because YOU can't name 10 blues albums from the last 10 years doesn't mean blues is boring. Sure it may not be your cup of tea, but if you dug past some of the "SRV wannabes", you may find some lesser knowns that are far from boring and definitely original. Some one also posted that if Nickelback is the biggest rock band, then rock is already dead. Remember a few decades ago when Michael Jackson ruled? If rock wasn't dead then ( minus Eddie on Beat It) it most certainly isn't now! You gotta be a little more optimistic bro and dig past all the "popular" bands that get the big press. Please don't take this as a personal attack, I just get frustrated when everyone complains that rock is dead.

MJ was pop (and, honestly, quite good).... Nickleback is what rock has become. Music killed itself around 2000. rock no longer has any place in pop culture other than defining the "weird" kids.... rock. is. dead.

To me, any music that isn't rap, country, blues, or Lady Gaga & friends is rock. Just because it doesn't sound like 'classic rock' doesn't mean it isn't rock. Musical genres are so crazy these days it's a crap shoot anyhow.

I am still waiting for the next Pink Floyd, the next Led Zeppelin blah blah etc etc. Not to copy them, but to go on to that level of awesome.

There are no bands out there today that have "it". NONE.

Still waiting....

I think you may need to prepare to wait for a long time, as the music industry is not what it once was, and I don't know if we'll ever see an era like how the 60s and 70s were for rock and rock bands ever again...

Well, all the influential bands have mostly all disappeared, never to be seen again....

All the bands that were influential came up with the techniques that make a great guitarist. They were considered great, new, and revolutionary because of the new stuff they came up with to do with a guitar. Now that every band seems to use those same techniques, licks, riffs, or whatever, it's just not as unique and different as it once was. NO BANDS will ever be considered another Led Zeppelin or SRV unless they revolutionize something else on the guitar that someone else hasn't already done.

this why i ignore local radio stations. im sick of hearing nickleback, shinedown, puddle of mud, theory of a dead man exc. i cant stand it

all of the instrumentals just seem to be over produced, generic and blend together

it just seemed like everyone wants to be nickleback or buck cherry and they both suck terribly

and dont get me started on modern country. it shouldnt even be called country its just pop with a cowboy hat.

with the exception of brad paisley that dude is amazing a true musician

I have been reading Guitar Player since the mid-70s and Guitar World since it's debut in the 80s and subscribed to both a couple of years ago.I find that G.P. writes informative articles on all genres on music but lately G.W. is steering more towards metal,,,,,

I expect that you knew your post wasn't going to end up short and sweet.
On the subject, I also chose not to renew for the same reason, but I expect that the staff chose to focus on a niche where they felt there was very strong interest. Judging from the 'metal' emphasis on VH-1, they're not wrong.
What I do not see in the previous comments are other sources being addressed. I subscribe to both Premier Guitar (which can be accessed FREE! online), and to Vintage Guitar. I would strongly suggest the former as a first, and the latter as a supplement to your information gathering. Guitar Player is and will always remain a given for me. My musical tastes range from Berry to Beethoven, from Petty to Prokofiev, from Van Halen to "Vagner" so what the hell do I know :?:

I'm 68.

i wouldnt go as far as saying nickleback and buckcherry suck.
they are selling out places everywhere they play and the cd sales are through the roof. somebody likes them ya know.
hel, theres bands out there that i cant stand but they are writing good stuff. they just arent for me is all.

when i was a kid country was known as country and western music.
the new country is great stuff. now, there are some artists that i dont see how they fall under the country label. they are pop with a cowboy hat
as you said. i guess thats where the term rockabilly came from.
we have to face the facts that music is/has changed over the yrs.
our tried and true's are no longer. i just try to pick out what i like and go from there. its hard to like a whole album these days.
now i like music by the song. everybody has at least 1 good song that i either like or can stand to listen to.
i remember the old days when there was a song on a album that you didnt like, if ya played it enough, you started to like it.
dang it grew on ya ya know.
these days if ya hear a bad song enough, if your not careful, you will find yourself up on a ledge somewhere ready to jump lol.

Hi ZZ Doc,I guess it was negligent of me not to mention Premier Guitar and Vintage Guitar as I subscribe to both of them too,as a matter of fact Vintage Guitar printed pix of part of my collection last year.I knew this thread would provoke intense debate and discussion.Way Cool Jr. there is emotion in a lot of classical guitar music, not all of course but there are pieces by Segovia,Romero,Diaz,Bream,Williams etc. that could bring a statue to tears.Elliott Fisk's transcriptions of Paganini's 24 Caprices has some really soulful passages such as Caprices 9 & 13 and his transcriptions of Vivaldi's concertos are also filled with beautiful sentiment. There are exceptions to the rule in just about every genre of music. Having said that I imagine that a lot of the old long-dead country music artists would be hitting 30,000 RPMs in their graves if the could hear what's being passed off as country music these days.I will agree though that Brad Paisley is a superb musician and joins the ranks of the best country pickers like Danny Gatten and Chet Atkins.

hum..... ive not listened to brad very much, maybe i should give him a go.
i just dont feel anything ive heard from classical guitar.
to me its very emotionless at best. not to say those playing arent good at their craft, most of the stuff ive heard was very nice, but didnt move me in any direction. im open to giving a few youtube videos a listen if you care to list a few. maybe i just dont understand it, which is possible too.
i like a lot of different kinds of stuff and i would like to have something classical in my collection. these people labor over their guitars and i respect them for that. its their love and their passion.
ok so i hope you can give me something to go on here.

Hi Way Cool Jr.,I don't know of any classical players on youtube as I don't watch youtube a heck of a lot but I guess if you did a search on youtube of any of the guitarists or pieces that I listed you'd get a fair idea of their passion and emotion.BTW if you want to see someone playing with intense passion check out Andy McKee on Youtube,if you haven't seen or heard him his style will blow you away.

Country music has had some really awesome guiatrs. Jerry Reed(snowman from smokey and the bandit) was amazing player but didn't get much respect outside of country. Chet Atkins was the KING of country guitarists. Brad Paisley is an awesome musician almost all of the guitar in his music is him playing a custom paisley telecaster.

The guy who build brad's guitars http://www.crookcustomguitars.com/paislies.php

Blues, hmm might I suggest

Magic Slim and the Tear Drops, many Albums/CD's

Guitar Shorty

Big Jim Slade

Just to name a few

want some newer more driving surf music?

Try The RazorBlades or The Sidemen

on Rock

Listen to some Andy Timmons, believe it or not but Peter Frampton has been putting out some very good guitar oriented tunes again.

as for waiting for the likes of Zeppelin or Floyd well their can never be another, but the torch will be taken up by another.
