We had complimentary tix for Ringo Starr's All-Star Band and Rick was one of the band for the 2010 tour and man, for a 62 year old guy, he really played and sang well!

He alternated between a red CS Strat, a red 335 and a red PRS 24 that was tricked out with 3 different pups and several switches and dials.

His vocals were amazing as he belted out Hang On Sloopy (his first hit song from when he was with The McCoys) and others such as Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo.

The rest of the band was made up of the singer/guitarist from The Romantics, the bass player from Mr Mister, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright
and Gregg Bissonette (who Ringo played drums beside when not out front singing).

Ringo sang a lot of his older Beatle songs (Help From My Friends, Boys, Act Naturally, I Wanna Be Your Man, Honey Don't, etc and a couple from his new Y-NOT album.

Ringo looked to be in great shape for a guy turning 70 next week and was funny with his banter between the audience as well.

But it was Rick Derringer that really impressed with some great singing, harmonies and guitar playing with Edgar Winter, especially, that really tore it up!

Rick and Edgar have been doing "Frankenstein" for a long time now.

Here's a much younger Rick and Edgar :

btw, He really gave that Strat selector switch a workout!

Never thought I'd see (and enjoy) a 70 year old Beatle in concert :

Rick Derringer is another great guitarist who hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves.I have an ancient issue of 16 magazine where there's a picture of him and the rest of the McCoys accepting the gold record for Hang on Sloopy.I wish I had a copier of some sort so that I could share it with everyone.

He mentioned something about "Sloopy" being a huge motivation.

Here's a good article about current tour :

I'd love to see The All Starr Band in concert but sadly the closest they are getting to me is Toronto or Winsor ON and that would cost a bundle that I don't have.I saw the last incarnation of the All Starr Band last year on a Sunday morning program on A&E and was really impressed,he played all his Beatle numbers and Liverpool plus several others-a great show.

I'm sure there will be a lot more clips on YT soon.

Ringo made several remarks during the night about "the great" Rick Derringer and seemed to be very impressed with his playing.

On songs like 'Act Naturally' he got some great clean, sweet tones, but could change it to gritty in a heartbeat and his solo (unaccompanied) during 'Frankenstein' was amazing!!!

His vocals were clear, distinct, articulate and he can still hit some of those high notes!

He's playing a gig here in Phoenix in August with Pat Travers at the Celebrity Theater. I am going to be there most definitely! 8)

Saw Rick with The Edgar Winter Group at White City Festival in London in '73, a great guitarist/singer/showman.

I saw Rick back in 1983 in a small club in San Francisco (anybody remember the Old Waldorf??). This back when he played exclusively BC Rich guitars (primarily the Mockingbird model). He killed. I saw him about 10 years later in Seattle, and he was not nearly as good as previous years. That '83 gig was one of my favorites ever ...
