Jimmy Vaughan's solo stuff is pretty cool, not sure how much you would here at a show. Other than one of his.

Just takes notes on which songs they play at the jams and learn those. Ask jam leader if they have a set list you can have at the end of the night.

Van Morrison's -- Baby Please Don't Go...
G-Tgood's -- Move it On Over...

Not to say you are a bad singer... But these don't require superb vocals...

I'm glad to hear that someone besides me is playing Fabulous Thunderbirds stuff; they are a criminally overlooked source for some great blues tunes.

Are people playing the early ("first fabulous four") albums or playing their hits? I have nothing against their three "commercial" albums ("Tuff Enuff", "Hot Number" and "Powerful Stuff"), but those are really not their best albums.

Even later, when Jimmie Vaughan left, they made some good discs; "Walk that Walk, Talk That Talk" was pretty good, but "Roll Of the Dice" from 1995 (Kid Ramos played guitar) was possibly their best album, outside of their early (pre-Tuff Enuff) albums.

Anyway, for blues jams, one of the best songs to throw out there has got to be "High Heeled Sneakers"...

I've been attending Blues jams for about 20 years now... will you be jamming with your own band there or just you with other jammers or the host band? Something to consider, there's a reason why you hear the same songs at Blues jams, just regular 12-bar (1,4,5) format, they're easier to follow. If you decide to learn a song that's not the standard 12-bar Blues then the other jammers will have a hard time following you, it won't sound good, and you'll be disappointed.

I would stick to the 1,4,5 format, learn a slow one, medium shuffle, and fast shuffle, that will prepare you for just about anything at a jam. Once you get to know the jammers out there you can find out what other songs they can play and attempt those.

There were times that I wanted to do some Cray but only a few knew the changes... here's a few songs to get you started:

Slow: Stormy Monday, sky is crying, sweet sixteen
Shufles: Help me (Sonny Boy or Jr), why you so mean to me (AK), Hideaway, etc...

one last thing, if this is a true Blues jam with "real" Blues players I wouldn't do any Gary Moore :) or even Hendrix... SRV yes, if you want something different that is.

Have fun! Jams are a great way to improve your playing.

I agree with Cedarblues, I think most jammers are comfortable with the 1,4,5 tunes, I know I am, and they are easy to follow. Have a blast !!! I love blues jams.

Haven't actually got around to playing it myself yet but ' Chains And Things ' by BB King sounds like a great song, in fact thinking about it gets me in the mood to do it now.
Also, if you got sax players involved, T-Bone Walker is worth looking at. 8)

At a jam, it's best to know the standards more of a chance they will all know the song.

"Matchbox" and "Born under a bad sign" by Albert King would be on my list.

One last thing, Unless you can play like him, avoid any SRV songs.

No hits, only old school Jimmie Vaughan stuff. I know a couple of people who are absolute Fabulous Thunderbirds fanatics. One is a guitarist and fellow Jimmie Vaughan follower and the other is a harmonica player who loves Kim Wilson. Both of those guys (the guys I know) are very, very good and they both know I love the Fabulous Thunderbirds too so we play songs by them very often. There are other people who play Thunderbirds songs too, but those guys in particular have been the most helpful to me.

I play with the harmonica player quite a bit, even on some of his regular gigs. He has a duo going with a bass player and they sometimes call a drummer and/or guitarist to sit in with them. The bass player is another of my friends/mentors and he's an Albert King fanatic. I love playing with them because if nothing else I know we'll play at least two Fabulous Thunderbirds songs, at least two Albert King songs with the occasional Freddie King instrumental thrown in. :D

Is "I'm Tore Down" too obvious? I really like Jeff Healey's take on that one. 8)

Most of the songs that I thought of have been suggested like Mannish Boy,Hoochie Coochie Man, in fact any Muddy or Wolf/Sumlin. The Wolf's Wang Dang Doodle has a great riff running through it that you can jam around. If you can, check out the version of it on the Howlin' Wolf London Sessions that he did with the British rock royality.Such as Clapton,Wyman, Watts,Winwood,Ian Stewart,Klaus Voorman along with Hubert Sumlin too of course. There isn't one song on that album that won't blow you away.

Try "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" by Eric Clapton (Derek & the Dominoes). Audiences love it and no one else in my area ever plays it, so it has become a trademark song for me at my gigs and jams. Here is a video of me performing it at BB King's Blues Club in Orlando.

Dude, 13? Really? I started when I was 13. How long have you been playing? I'm 17, I've just been playing blues for about a year. Before that mostly rock. I really wish I had gotten into blues sooner, it's so much deeper than I thought it would be. :D

In that video I'm playing my Gibson ES-345 Reissue through my Fender Blues Deluxe amp. I use a Morley "Volume Plus" Volume pedal to switch between rhythm and my solos.

Thanks for the kind words. I've been playing since I was 5 yrs. old and playing professionally for about 2 yrs. now.

Check out my other You-tube videos ( I have 16 now) and my website:
