I have been getting out a little and attending local Blues Jams. I have no participated as of yet. I need to work on my playing a little in my opinion.

I would like to come up with about 10 songs to work on and could use some help. Something that might be known by others but not the mainstream songs that are usually done at these jams. I have picked a couple popular ones, but need some ideas for the others.

1. Still Got The Blues by Gary Moore

2. Red House by Jimi Hendrix

3. Stormy Monday (I haven't decided whose version yet)

4. ?

Try some of The Doors' stuff, that's some really good jammy blues. My tip would probably be Cars Hiss By My Window. Get a guy along on the harmonica, and it'll be great! Lots of room for guitar improvisation aswell.

Thinking of steppin' out, huh? Boy you must be feeling better :D

Freddie King's upbeat stuff seems to go over well at the jams; I'm Tore Down or Further On Up The Road.

Everyone you play with will always have a different version of Stormy Monday. I play the Allman's Brothers version because it's my favorite, but everyone puts a different spin on it and you always have to be prepared to play a song you learned different than you learned it. Mustang Sally is another song like that, and one you should know. :)

I think everyone's basically covered it, the only thing I can add is that it's good to have a working knowledge of B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf (Hubert Sumlin), Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Freddie King and other big names. I encounter a lot of people playing Fabulous Thunderbirds songs around here (much more so than SRV, usually one or two per jam), but I'm not sure if that's a regional thing or national. Learning some Albert King would also be helpful, people usually won't throw Born Under a Bad Sign at you unless you know it, but be prepared for Crosscut Saw and songs with similar beats. Also listen to Jimmy Reed, particularly Bright Lights, Big City and Big Boss Man. Lots of people play those.

Try Hideaway, John Mayall's Blues Breakers version or Sweet Home Chicago (any of E.C.'s versions are fun)

I've been attending Blues jams for about 20 years now... will you be jamming with your own band there or just you with other jammers or the host band? Something to consider, there's a reason why you hear the same songs at Blues jams, just regular 12-bar (1,4,5) format, they're easier to follow. If you decide to learn a song that's not the standard 12-bar Blues then the other jammers will have a hard time following you, it won't sound good, and you'll be disappointed.

I would stick to the 1,4,5 format, learn a slow one, medium shuffle, and fast shuffle, that will prepare you for just about anything at a jam. Once you get to know the jammers out there you can find out what other songs they can play and attempt those.

There were times that I wanted to do some Cray but only a few knew the changes... here's a few songs to get you started:

Slow: Stormy Monday, sky is crying, sweet sixteen
Shufles: Help me (Sonny Boy or Jr), why you so mean to me (AK), Hideaway, etc...

one last thing, if this is a true Blues jam with "real" Blues players I wouldn't do any Gary Moore :) or even Hendrix... SRV yes, if you want something different that is.

Have fun! Jams are a great way to improve your playing.
