I had typed out a long response to this post, but then I decided to delete it. No since starting an argument over all this. I'll just keep that opinion to myself.

But what I will say is:

The music business is in terrible shape these days and it's constantly getting in a bind with itself. It will eventually lead to ruin.

I don't feel sorry for any of the corporate fat cats that loose out on money from people downloading music for free. I'd rather pay to see the band live than pay for a CD of theirs of which a large chunk doesn't go to them.

The world needs more managers like Peter Grant.

I think the state of the recording companies is well earned karma. These guys have ripped off artists for decades. Remember Tom Petty having to sue when he found out they had stolen the rights to his music? How many artists released a first album and found out they were bankrupt? They did this to hundreds of artists.

Now they're crying the blues when they get ripped off? Boofreakinhoo. It's payback. The days of the big labels are gone. Technology allows self recording so you don't need a record company to pay for studio time. Hell, I've got better gear in my modest studio (spare bedroom) then Yes used in 1972 to make Close to the Edge. The labels are in their death throws, lashing out for survival.

What about copyright laws? Illegal downloading hurts all songwriters and artists, not just fat cat record labels.

What is the new business model? Use music as advertising for live concerts? If music is put up for sale on sites like iTunes, and it's free from pirates like LimeWire, it's hard to beat free.

they don't have radio anymore for free... this leads to the decline of many artists since they can't get their music out to the mainstream... even though illegal downloading is rediculous in this country, no one would be able to know what to download without hearing it on the radio.

bad decision if it every gets fully considered in my opinion

another thing, i honestly think this is the least of our worries in the music industry.... it has worked fine for so many years

if you want to do something productive, start cracking down on illegal downloading and start monitoring programs like limewire and such, thats whats really killing the music industry

downloading music for free ≠ copyright infringement.

The songwriters (copyright holders) don't collect the royalties they've earned. I've read a lot of rationalizations here and elsewhere about downloading from P2P sites. You'll never convince me that it isn't theft.

This makes me wonder how many "live" recordings that have been made, and sold, by bands that haven't bought the proper license or permission on the cover tunes that they've played.

It must be great for intellectual property lawyers now.

Of course it's theft. Imagine some stranger walking into your job and telling your boss that you don't deserve credit for the last 5 minutes of work and your boss shorts your paycheck accordingly.....then gives that 5 minutes of pay to that stranger!

Now imagine 10,000 people doing that to you every week just because they can.

With illegal downloading your telling your favorite artists that as far as your concerned they don't deserve the royalty for that piece of work.

If an artist wants his/her music to be free, they post it on MySpace or their website. If they haven't posted it for free somewhere, it means they expect to get paid for it.

I'm not saying it's not theft, because, well, it is. To me, unless you start to claim the work (ie music) is yours, or use it for commercial purposes without paying royalties and such then you're not violating copyright. Well, the law does not agree with me but the law contains many strange idiosyncrasies. ;)
