.........Oh.......Who am I kidding.............................

I want to buy a CHEAP (but still playable, stays in tune, and sounds good and full) Hollow Body Electric Guitar.

Tell me what to look for on ebay and craigslist (especially if it's an old model). Would love to find something that an American sawed, glued, and painted. There are some $200 new things on ebay. Is that stuff OK, or just a ticket to misery?

ES335, yeah perfection. But too many Ben Franklins. Think you know the next best thing for $200 - 300? Let us all in on it.

You're certainly not going to get anything new in an acoustic electric in that price range.Expect to pay even more than that for a good used acoustic electric.I take it that you mean something like an Epiphone Casino (with P90 single coils)or an Epi Dot(with humbuckers)as opposed to a hollow body dreadnaught electric acoustic such as an EJ 160 E.My advice to you is to save up at least 1 or $200 more because the chances of getting a good acoustic electric in that price range are remote unless you lucked into a phenominal bargain. If you want a decent guitar that will give you years of hastle service it's really worth the wait. You may luck into something in the $300 range but certainly no cheaper than that.

Take a look at this one here.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/Peavey-JF-1-Hollowbody-Guitar-Black-NEW-/140414668988?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item20b15dd0bc

It is a Peavey JF-1.
It is made in china for Peavey, they have been making them for a few years now and i have not heard anything bad about them. I have played a couple and they play well enough for a 300 dollar guitar.

I think it will do what you need it too.

I own a Washburn HB 30. The cost was $325.00. I did replace the pickups with Seymore Duncans (1 pearly gates / 1 alnico pro). The guitar sounds great, plays good and is a good bargain in my opinion. It is not however, a Gibson 335 - it is made in China and therefore you get Chinese quality

Gretsch G5120.

For the price, it is the best hollowbody around.

I'm a bit confused. The ES-335 is a semi-hollow body guitar. It's thinner than a regular hollow-body and has a block of wood running down the center of the body – the wings are hollow. If that is what you are looking for you might want to check out the Ibanez AS73. I own one & I'm very happy with it. Street price for a new one is around $400 (not including case).

On the other hand, if you are looking for a full hollow body (thicker, completely hollow like an acoustic) than you may want to look at the Ibanez AF75. It too is around $400 for a new one.

In any event, good luck in your search for a new guitar!

Actually, this brings up a question. What is the difference in tone with a full body vs. a semi hollow/hollow body guitar? Or just what is the difference anyway besides the weight and f-holes in the guitar?

Thanks.

Epiphone Studio Dot. I belive they're around $300.00 but you could probably find a used one for around 200 or so on E-Bay or Craigs List. I've tried one before and they're pretty good guitars for the price.

+1

I played one of these at guitar center the other day and really liked it

or

if you can find one the DeArmond Starfire and X series guitars are very very good for the price.

usually the semi hollow body has a solid block running through it, while the hollow body doesn't have the block.

Ibanez Atrcore AS73.

I got mine used for $200 and it a nice guitar. I like it way better than the Epi Dot. I threw some SD Phat Cat pups in it and it's totally amazing. It's my go to beater open mic , don't worry about guitar. It sounded good with the stock pups too.

A hollow body guitar should have a warmer, fatter sound than a semi-hollow. A semi-hollow is about 40% the thickness of a regular hollow body. The SH will have a block of wood going down the middle of the body which reduces feedback and increases sustain (vs a HB).

To listen to tonal differences you might want to check out YOUTUBE. Lookup Larry Carlton for semi-hollow and Kenny Burrell for full hollow.

BTW, in the past Eric Clapton has used a semi-hollow for both blues & rock.
