I've got to admit, I'm having more fun supporting my son with his music than I am playing my music. He's a 15 year old drummer, a lefty at that, and IMHO, pretty good. He's also a good guitarist, playing right handed. I can't get him off the Les Paul to use the Strat I have tho. He's into the Metal and the Alt Rock thing (Green Day, Bullet For My Valentine, Mettallica), and he's writing some originals with the guitarist in his band. They only play out about once every month or two at a local teen hangout. They have a website and a small fan base, so they're on the right track.
Thing is I'm spending my time, efforts, and money on him and his musical wants and needs, and my stuff is being neglected. We go GC and I end up buying drum sticks, heads, drum accessories, whatever, and walking right by the new Strats and amps that I used to really want.
I guess I'm giving him the support that my folks never could or wanted to. I'm hoping he stays with it, cause it's keeping him out of trouble (for now).
Are you guys supporting your kid's musical life?

My daughter (13) and I are actually taking guitar lessons together.

She expressed an interest in wanting to learn to play and write her own songs.

I played the piano when I was "much" younger and I thought it would be a great thing to do together.

We are only about 3 months into it but I am really enjoying the father/daughter bonding time...

Now I just have to get her to promise to let me be her guitar tech when she gets to be rich and famous :)

Of course I do. My children grew up listening to my generation's music and favor it over some of the stuff that passes for music today. I guess this was a good thing because they all play and have taken possession of over half of my instruments etc. !! Well worth it though! Now the grandchildren are strolling down the same path.

Oh well, a family that plays(music) together stays together!! :D

Unfortunately I do not get to see my son but once a year, that said he will be 13 in 2 months so we bought him a new AM Standard Strat..:) and a new Fender SCXD amp. I give him lessons whenever he is down here with us so it is always a great time. Especially seeing how well he has developed as a player.

My son plays keyboards and is really into the New Orleans funk style a la The Meters, Allen Toussaint, The Neville Brothers.....funky stuff.

He's a lefty and I could never get him to understand the guitar, but he's happy and that's all that matters.

Both of my sons are musical

The 17 year old plays Drums and Guitar
15 year old plays Bass and Guitar

Both of them play in ensembles at their High School and in "garage bands. We jam at the house as a 3 piece too (drives my wife a bit nuts sometimes). It's tons of fun and music is a great way to stay connected and involved with your children.

Of my 2 daughters only the younger one expressed any interest in picking up an instrument. For the longest time she was after us to get her a bass. A few years ago on a trip to Ottawa I went into Steve's music and bought my lefty MIM Strat and while there spotted a Candy Apple Red P-Bass copy for a very low price and it actually sounded great so I picked it up for her. When she picked us up at the airport she saw the 2 cases and asked why I bought 2 guitars, when I told her that the big case was her new bass she almost fainted. For about 6 months she never put it down and I showed her the bass line for Manic Depression for her first song.Sadly she lost interest and has moved out and left the bass for me to play with. Her current boyfriend is a Fender man and lately she has been talking about picking it up again-I remain hopeful-at least she still plays a decent blues harp.

Two of my three sons play several instruments...guitar,bass,drums,but mostly guitar. I support them by "loaning" guitars and amps that I'm no longer using, along with their own stuff. It gives me excuses to buy more stuff.
Both of them are in their 20s and really good musicians...I'm proud.

I dont have any kids to support but my parents do support me.

my parents have bought all of my guitars except for 1 and they help me in getting all of me needs. like my dad will go pick up some strings and stuff for me after he gets off work if i need them.

my parents also motivate me and encourage me to suceed in music, they take me to lessons and support me when i need it. and try to push me and help me out even though they understand very little about music.

i am grateful for what my parents do and how they support me musically and i love them. and i'm sure all of yalls kids are very grateful of what yall do for them also.

My parents always encouraged my musical endeavours too.As a matter of fact they bought me my first 4 guitars and my first amp.Being musical themselves(Mom a church organist,Dad a choir director)they were only too happy to have my sister and I get into music-although my sister was never obsessed like I am.So I passed my interest on to my daughters but only one got into it.
