The blues will never fade away as long as we have new generations that fall in love with the music. In other words...No need in reviving something that lives.

I hate to disagree, I really do, but the Blues are in trouble. I live in South Florida where we have one of the largest and fastest growing Blues societies in the US and I see clubs and venues closing here all the time. Too many bands vying for too few gigs. Check out Bob Margolin's article in blueswax.com to see what a veteran road warrior has to say about the state of the Blues.

I don't believe the Blues will die, it is too well rooted in the genres it's spawned. But I'd love to see it go mainstream at least one more time.

If there wasn't trouble, it wouldn't be the blues. ;-)

If there's "too many bands" then where's the loss of interest in the blues? If there's "too few gigs" then that should inspire those bands to work on their chops to get the few gigs that there are. As for road warrior-ing, I spent 160 nights in hotels this year, and I found a blues jam in just about every town I've been to. Every blues show I went to this year sold well, both big names and locals. Lots of Blues Societies nationwide, lots of Blues publications, lots of new recordings, festivals, new players etc etc etc. I can't believe there's a shortage of resources for players and fans alike.

I've had someone ask me, "If Blues music is so great, why does it need special societies to keep it alive?" The question caught me by surprise and I didn't have a really good answer for him. Two years later, I still don't have one.

Why are there fewer venues here for Blues? Regretably because other kinds of music draw bigger crowds. It's South Florida so Latin, Alt, and Hip Hop are big.

That's the short answer, but I could write a book on the subject.

I think it has festivals and societies to keep the Traditions alive and because they're fun. A well known Band Master in the late 1800(I can't remeber who right now) traveled to the south. In a letter to his wife he wrote "I saw the most pecuiar thing today, a colored man was playing a guitar flat on his lap, while using a metal bar to slide up and down on the strings." or something to that effect.

Before it was recorded, Blues was passed on like any good folk music. It's in no danger of dying.

See?

The world would be a better place if everyone owned a nicely tweaked Fender Stratocaster.

I can almost agree....

I think the world would be a better place if everybody who already owns a nice Strat learned to play.

It was W.C. Handy. If anyone thinks the Blues are 'in trouble, go fight the crowds at the annual W.C. Handy Blues Festival in Memphis.

stratmansteve, good point about the music being passed on prior to recording. While other genres have survived this way as well, most notably classical, traditional and indiginous musics, like the delta Blues, were not even transcribed. But as far as the 'need' for societies and clubs, the music would still be here without them. Their purpose is for mutual enjoyment, just as it is for railroad societies or quilting clubs. It's simply more fun to enjoy the things we love with others who feel the same way.

Cheers,

N.

Thanks, but credit for this statement belongs to FirstMeasure.

In any case, it's good to find so many people with positive things to say about the State of the Blues.

I was a lot more worried about the Blues in the '80s. There was no Sirius or XM Blues Stations, no BET Jazz specials, no Liner Notes on tape jackets. We really had to dig to find anything that wasn't on Aligator.

Ry Cooder and the movie Crossroads turned the Breacfast Club crowd on to the Blues.

Stratmansteve-thanks for the props 8)

Noley-WC Handy....that explains so much of the story. I won't forget that again.

Cryingstrat- That's a straight signal into a Fender Stage 112se behind the camera.
