The following sign was spotted on a church lawn:" Honk if you love Jesus... text while driving if you want to meet Him."That speaks volumes since a very large number of drivers on the road these days are oblivious to the rules of the road-combine that with texting or talking on a cellphone and it's a recipe for disaster.Texting or talking on a cellphone is worth up to a $400 fine here for a first offence and doubles if you're caught a second time.Studies have found that cell phone use while driving is on par with driving over the legal alcohol limit.

Yes, that's my personal experience. The only time I used the phone while driving I was shocked at how much my control of the car diminished. Never did it again.

It is highly illegal in my country. Doesn't stop you seeing lots of people doing it though. The first thing the police check after a serious accident is whether the driver was making a call at the time (from his phone records). If he was - he's for the high jump...

People should also know that the airbag computer of their car records lots of informations about their driving condition at the moment of the crash. Insurance companies can court request the computer to avoid paying in case of bad driving. At the moment of the crash, the computer records and can tell if you were stepping on the gas or if you were braking. If you were going at 160 km/h or were having an erratic driving prior to the crash. It is normal that they check for cell phone usage where the law prohibit it's use while driving. I remember seeing the other day on tv that GM has an new anti-theft device where they can limit the speed of the car via their Onstar system. Let's hope that Big Brother will not misuse this device. :?

Cell phones, texting, anything that can cause a distraction while, may or may not be against the law from penal code standpoint, can get you
into some deep trouble if you injured or killed someone.

They don't teach common sense anymore. Using common sense is what
keeps you out of trouble.

IMHO, they ought to have a common sense quiz on the written test and
behind the wheel.

As a woman who has 40 plus years in the saddle of various motorcycles, I have learned to avoid 1)anybody with a cell phone to their ear, 2)mini vans loaded with kids and 3)any idiot that is driving the least bit erratic.

It is sad that state governments have to pass laws to ban cell phoning and or texting while driving-but then they make it all but impossible to enforce-with subtlties like "this can be added on to a felony stop, but can't be the reason for the stop" It is so rediculous that people do not have enough common sense to police themselves and just STOP using the darn things while driving-and stop eatting or shaving, or putting on makeup etc. If people would only take SERIOUSLY their actions behind the wheel-they are driving a 2-3 ton lethal weapon, not a family sport sedan or pickup truck. But a lethal weapon and when they are distracted even for a second horrible things happen.

My friend Terry was 43 when she lost her life in an accident where a truck took a left turn directly in front of her. Why? because the driver was on his cell phone and diverting full attention to the road and other traffic.

My friend Carla is permanently disabled because of another cell phone using driver.

Since we can't get rid of cell phones, as they have become part of the culture, and we can't legislate stupidity-on the part of those who insist on using them while driving, while in the movies, while in a resturant. What is the answer? I surely don't know.

Yeah people who talk on cell phones while driving are dangerous.

I was driving down the freeway the other day and some woman comes flying by me. I look and she was talking on a cell phone. so I look away for a second and when I look back, she's half way in my lane and almost hits.

It scared me so bad I dropped my razor in my coffee and it spilled all over the book I reading.

They just passed a Cell phone law here in Maryland and it goes into effect in October. $40. first offense and $100. for each after, but either way it is a secondary offense. That means you have to be doing something else wrong to be stopped and ticketed for it. Thats how the seat belt law used to be , they couldn't stop you for that but if you were not wearing it and got stopped for something else then you get it for the seat belt too.
They seem to bring them on incrementally to avoid uproar. Next year someone will die because of cell phone use and they will then make it a primary offense the following year.

I actually prefer to drive next to a drunk driver, than next to someone on a cell phone while driving. The drunk driver actually drives better.

I only say what I say as one who drove 18+wheel tractor-trailer rigs for a livin'.
Now retired, I was a PROFESSIONAL Comercial Truck Driver.
From the cab of a truck, you see everyone doing something stupid. Oftentimes, you see it before it happens.

I don't care if you are driving a semi-truck, driving a tourbus or a schoolbus, driving a pickup, or any truck up to 26,000 lbs, a minivan, a car or riding a motorcycle, moped or bicycle or kiddie tricycle. I don't even care if you are walkin or pushin' a wheelchair.
You have to drive defensively at ALL times. Expect the unexpected.
I don't trust anyone. Male or female, young or old.
I figured out a long time ago that stupidity resides in those who glory in
rebelliousness. Sooner or later, one way or the other, the "rebel" is going to crack his or her own coconut because of their own stupidity.

IF you know someone who is accident prone in other areas of life, you can
bet that person is high risk behind the wheel or in the saddle.
For this reason, even though the law allows for anyone to drive a car, as it stands, it does nothing to prevent stupidity from getting behind the wheel.
And I can tell you that the law itself is occasionally poorly written by... yess.. foolish legislators.

Not everyone was meant to operate a motor vehicle. Many simply have no business doing so.

If you're gonna take/make a call, at least have a bluetooth. And about texting...is the overly abbreviated and probably unimportant message worth killing a mother and her child in the other car and maybe yourself?

As far as the policy stuff goes, when people don't govern themselves, the government is easily able to justify making more laws to impose upon the public. As a person who is anti big government, I have a big problem with that, and of course an even bigger problem with people who give up their freedoms and those of everyone around them by refusing to act with decency and common sense.

+ 100 % never a truer word spoken, my ex never wanted to drive and i never tried to force her, a car licence is too easy to obtain (albeit expensive) and i think the real learning starts after you get the licence.

I have a cell phone I can clip to my visor and use as a speaker phone and even then, when I get a call, I inform the other party I'm driving and will call then back at my next stop.

I once was flabbergasted to see the operator of a Gold Wing motorcycle talking on a cell phone while riding the bike. I was really kinda pissed! How can a motorcyclist complain about drivers when drivers can clearly see a motorcyclist doing the same? :?

Bottom line... don't use a phone while driving anything. 8)
