I have been having an issue for some time now in using the links to Mark Forums as Read. It just doesn't do anything, no errors, no odd messages, nothing. It just won't mark anything as read. I have to log out and log back in.

I know this isn't an issue with my computer I get the same behavior no matter what computer I use. It happens on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 with both IE8 and Firefox 3.6.4. I keep everything up to date and have tried clearing my temporary files, browser cache and history and everything else I can think of.

Please help as logging out and back in isn't a big deal but it is annoying...

Thanks

Bob

I should preface this by stating that I'm not hugely confident we'll be able to solve this one for you. :-( That said, out of curiosity, you say you were trying various computers but were they all on the same *network*? Just trying to determine if the issue is something related to your user ID or your network connection.

I am seeing this problem on computers in my home network, on my laptop when connected to my cellular broadband card and also on my computers at work.

It doesn't seem to matter what network I am on...

Running a software-based firewall on these machines, or anything else unusual that might distinguish them from an "average Joe" configuration?

These days I would hope a software firewall IS the "standard Joe" configuration ;)

To answer your question, Yes and No.

On my home computers and my laptop I am running Norton 360. The home network is a combination of Win7 and WinXP and my laptop runs WinVista.

On the work computers they run Trend Micro Officescan which I am not certain but I don't think has a firewall. The work machines run WinXP.

Last thing worth mentioning here is that I have been running Norton 360 on my home machines and the laptop for years but this problem with marking the forums as read has only been happening for a few months or so. I joined the forums here in January and initially I WAS able to mark the forums as read without any problems.

Yeah, nothing unusual there so I'm not sure I'm getting any closer to the issue with this line of questioning. Just so I'm clear, though, this is only your 3rd post here -- I'm interpreting that you've been reading and not posting for a while?

Shoot, yeah, unfortunately I don't have a lot to work with here. I can tell you that we definitely have not changed anything significantly on this end in the timeframe you're mentioning.

Are you signed in on more than one computer at a time?

Do you have it set up so that it logs you in automatically each time you go to the Forum?

Do you leave your computers on all of the time?

Try this:

These must be done on each computer before you log back in to the forum on any computer.

Make sure you are signed out on each computer.
Close the tab/window that the Forum was open in.
Reboot each computer.

Pick one computer, Open a browser window, open a second tab, go to the Forum and log in, read whatever posts you want, go back to the main Forum page and try to mark all as read.

I haven't had this problem on either of my computers.

I do NOT sign into the forums on more than 1 computer at a time.

The computer is restarted on a daily basis but is on pretty much all the time otherwise.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have already tried that and even went as far as clearing the history and cache from every computer in the house that I have ever logged in from.

I was thinking that it may be the proxy servers I am behind at home and work as I do web content filtering (have kids) at home and they also do web content filtering at work. That doesn't explain though why I still have the problem when I use my broadband card in the laptop...
