I was reading in Vintage Guitar mag that SRV's guitar tech used a novel method to prevent string binding. In Strats and other string-through-body guitars the strings can bind at the top of the hole where the string comes up before it reaches the bridge. He remedies this by sliding a 5/8" piece of stripped plastic wire insulation down over the entire length of the string to the ball end before he puts them on.The string then just slides through the plastic even with extensive bending and whammy use. This method must work because Stevie showed no mercy on the whammy and really bent the guts out of his strings.I'll be trying that on my next string change. BTW apparently Nut Sauce is also useful for keeping strings cleaner longer as it also displaces moisture and resists grime, all you do is apply some to a cloth and wipe the length of the string with it.

Interesting tip. Be sure to post some pics and how you feel about it after it's done.

Floyd, it's where the string gets caught on a sharp edge of the guitar. Either the hole behind the saddle, or the nut slot edges.

I dont use nutsauce. I refuse to pay £5 for a dab of vasceline, and thats all it is. If you wipe vasceline over your strings you'll acheive the same effect. From using the stuff on nutslots I think it will attract dirt.

I may give the sleeve idea a go though

I don't think that article is totally acccurate. Martinez put the tubing on SRV's guitars to prevent string breakage. He place the tubing right where the string hit the sharp edge of the saddle. He'd have to run the string through the tubing after the string was put through the bridge. If you look at the pictures of the CS SRV Tribute you can clearly see them.

Look here...

Yes, that was my understanding too. And obviously it's only an issue on vintage type saddles.

Cheers - C

over at www.music123.com they sell for a modest ($4.00 price if memory serves) a material simular to what you describe for strats and other trem systems. It would also be simular to what was used on strings of old (from instruments of the 30's and before). Typically this would be seen as a green small piece whose job was to protect the string from severe bends where it met up with tailpieces and such.
