How do you read tabs? I have a hard time figuring those out. I guess I'm used to sheet music so much that this form of guitar music is so foreign to me.

Thanks.

Gee.. I was once just like you.. I always read traditional music (and still do)... tab seemed kind of weird to me... But now I can sight read it and I think its a hell of a lot better than reading traditional music...

Keep at it... If you are a good reader, tab will come very easy to you...

I may be new to guitars, but have played banjo for years. Banjo music has long been tabbed out-vs written in standard notational form. Guitar tab is no different than banjo tab in how it is written.

each line represents a string. The top line, represents the top string on the guitar (note wise-in otherwords the string closest to your leg) and the bottom line represents the lowest string-or the one closest to your chest. The numbers represent what fret to play on that string-like a "C" chord could be written as 0
1
0
2
3
X =(do not strum this string)
The "0" indicates play the string open, so you would have 1st string "open", second string played at the 1st fret, third string "open", fourth string played at 2nd fret, fifth string played at 3rd fret, and 6th string not strummed.

a "slur" between two notes (2~3 (usually indicated with a rounded slur) would indicate a "slide", but sometimes indicates a hammer on (when the numbers go up) or a pull off (when the numbers go down (3~2))

Hope this helps.
Jan

I saw a band the other night with this thing clipped to the headstock of his acoustic guitar. I thought it was a tuner until I noticed he wasn't taking his eyes off it much.

I asked what it was when they took a break and it was one of these iTab gizmos :

From what he showed me it seemed pretty nice to have, especially if you take requests.

Hi LVA: if you can already read sheet music then you are way ahead of the game. TAB is in large part for people who struggle with notes on a stave. If you can handle that then the TAB can still be handy for indicating fingering - but for you it's just a supplimentary aid, running beneath the real music.

No need to learn how to walk if you can already run! 8)

Cheers - C

I'm not a big fan of Tab.

Years ago a I wanted to learn a very complicated song. Well I got the Tab and wouldn't know it I was having a beast of a time getting it.

I told a buddy of mine that I was having problems and he said, "Oh, that song? It goes like this."

By the end of three days I had the song licked without TAB.

I will say, Tab does tell you where the notes are located.

Tab doesn't fill in the gap your ear fills. Also the Tab for a certain song might be different than the way the artist plays the song.

Lastly most great players, like Hendrix never spent that much time thinking out their lead parts. They just played.
