here's my guess, its between 1950 and 1960 and you said its more of a "burst." when the les pauls came out in sunburst they were just called bursts. i guess it is a 50's model les paul.

(DISCLAIMER: the above gibson information may or may not be correct)

that was my guess , so alright everyone, shoot me down!

that would make sense considering his thread about LPs a few days ago...

Winner! I bit the bullet and bought it. My first electric Gibson! And most likely the last since I can't afford anything else.

I could not justify the extra coin for a '59. It is like $2,000 dollars more for a flame top. Ridiculous! I have seen refinished goldtops that had nice flame tops underneath so obviously the material is not super expensive.

I prefer the plain tops anyways... for numerous reasons. Closer to original vintage looks + subtle tone differences IMO.

I was saving for a nice Fender custom shop, but I was discouraged after not being able to order one where I live. Maybe in the future. :(

This is my finish (not the actual guitar I bought)

oh yea! kaleb chambers with the assist! and the crowd goes wild! aaaaaaahhhh

i agree with you, i like the plain top better than the flame, more vintage style and i think it looks 'cleaner' ya know? IMO.

Great guitar to have Nevin,I'll bet you're like a kid waiting for Christmas. Although the '59 has a flame maple top doesn't it have lower frets and a slimmer neck than the '58?The thing that made the original '59 so desirable was the smaller frets and slimmer neck profile hence the nickname "The Fretless Wonder".Anyway congrats on a fine guitar,my guess is that you'll lock yourself away the first few days you have it and get acquainted.

I thought it was going to be a real vintage 50's guitar! Nice score though, I'd love to have one.

The biggest difference between the guitars ( 58, 59, 60 ) historically has always been the neck. Although there are misconceptions... necks varied wildly. For example, in 1960 you could still find the odd neck that was huge, even though that was "phased out" by then.

My 58 should have a pretty beefy neck, but we shall see. I think they still vary guitar to guitar. The big neck just feels like home.

Also, my 58 will be heavier than the 59. To me, the extra cash is not worth it. The flame tops they put out now are not like the originals, although the slight weight reduction would be nice. Mine should weigh around the 9 pound mark or less.

And yes, when I get it, I won't see the light of day for quite some time!

Although I haven't personally sampled a '58 VOS, I have played the
'56 VOS Gold Top with P90s. I gotta tell ya, I sure was impressed by
the sound coming out of that guitar. In the meantime, I am prospecting
different ideas for my new AM STNDRD Strat. Something like a small
library of pickguards fitted with different pickup combinations. Including
P90s.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope it's everything you expect it to be.
:D
