I wanna start a band up, and Id like to sing in it and play guitar but I dont think my guitar skills are good enough.
Did anyone get in a band with beginner guitar skills??? And just learn along the way?

Theres plenty of well known bands that still have beginner guitar skills

just about anything labeled as punk or grunge comes to mind...

Hmmm well, after many years of solo touring in rileyland, a man approached me saying that he was very pleased with my style of playing and wanted to start a band. I accepted, and we went on tour for almost 3 months (again, in rileyland). I WISH I HAD A BAND

me and my friend found our drummer and bassist... the only problem is he wants to open with cover... ok, thats fine... the problem is what he wants to cover... i said, "ok so we'll do maybe lithium, school and maybe throw in rooster?"... "no. master of puppets."... if we run into this problem again ill have to find a way to get out of this and start a 3 piece with the drummer and bassist... :?

The last band I was in started when my buddies neighbour wanted to play at a community garden party with his brothers and wanted my buddy to play drums. They asked me to play lead and picked up an aquaintance to play bass.We got together at the bass players place to practice.I had to tune their guitars for them, two were tone deaf as well as only knowing major chords and the oldest brother wasn't much better.Somehow we managed to get them somewhat organized and played the garden party..what a fiasco, one guy figured he'd party like the rock star he thought he was and got totally blathered so much so that the soundman shut down his mike and guitar and he was too pi55ed to notice.needless to say we parted ways and bid the brothers goodbye.Having found out that the bass player was superb we called up another guitarist we used to jam with and the 4 of us started up jamming and after 3 or 4 months had enough songs put together for 4 sets and then some.Once we started playing we started getting some really lucrative private functions and very rarely had to rely on playing long and tiring gigs at clubs, sadly it came to an end when the bass player's wife took a job 50 miles away and they had to move but it was great while it lasted even getting the prime suites in an exclusive resort we got booked in several times.

the drummer Im "practicing with at the moment doesn't co operate. He says, "can you figure out a drum beat?" an i'm vey glad i got to do that, but when I show him he doesn't even play it. WTF?? Also there are no bassists that aren't junkies that i hate in our area.

In January of this year, two girls I knew who had been playing together for a while in a duo acoustic kind of setup came to me and said they wanted to go plugged, and asked if I wanted to get on board. They played all original music and were good writers, so of course I was in. They gave me musical freedom, and I got to play a big role in the design work of our overall sound. One of the girls, a percussion major, very good on a snare, played drums, and the other stayed on acoustic. We practiced a couple of times that way and they decided she was going back to guitar, electric this time, and we brought in another guy I knew pretty well who is superb on set. In April, at an outdoor show on campus the girls had played the year before, we played our first show as a whole band. I'm looking forward to the coming months. We have a lot of new music we've all been working on over the summer, and I'm anxious to get on a stage again.

Maybe a better question for some of us is....how many bands have you started and who quit first?

My best friend (drummer) and I went to see a concert, after the concert he turned to me and said "I wanna do that" I replied "don't we all?". A couple days later, after hockey practice, we went up to one of our best players and close friend and asked him if he would sing, he said sure. Now in a couple days we're going to hang out at a few guitar stores and try to find a bassist.

If you wanna bassist go to some open mic nights and public jamming, s'what I'm doing.

I agree. At an open jam, you can see and hear how good that person really is, and you can see how they interact with others.

Sounds like you have about three options, either play bass yourself (its not THAT bad), just tolerate one of the junkies, or buy someone a bass (preferably someone who plays guitar.)
Unfortunately none are ideal scenarios.

just be warned that if you take up bass, whichever side you use to pick will be in A LOT of pain at first...

To be honest i dont reckon some bands "need" a bass, but we'll see how it goes

by listening you wouldnt think so, but when youre playing you realize how much you need it... the bass and drums are there to keep the beat and keep everyone on time (or off if thats the goal)... look up some AC/DC performances to see the ideal rhythm section. Phil Rudd is a human metronome...

Well, I heard these guys in my neighborhood playing "Come together" and I thought I would stop by...
The recently kicked out their crazy rhythm guitarist, so I got the spot. :D
