When in doubt, run scales.

And learn new scales.

Then run though random chord changes.

Then remember this is all for fun, don't take yourself so seriously.

(Unless your in a band, then you need to be more about business)

this is fun.

"guitargirl93", do you always use a u for you and a 2 for to and I as the subject?

Start playing songs. Nothing is more boring then sitting around running scales and playing the same riff over and over and over again. You've been playing for a year so you should know all the chords you need. Find the chord progressions for your favourite songs and play them... and sing along! Jam with the CD. You'll have a lot more fun and progress much faster then the guys spending hours trying to master SRV licks.

Try recording yourself and then really listen and you'll hear things that you might want to do differently.

I played with a drummer who was a student of Alan Dawson (drummer) and he said you should record yourself as much as possible and then really listen to it.

Good luck!

If I get in a rough spot I get out some of the songs I can play and really like and try to improve on them. Different riffs or positions etc. But like I said when I started "this is going to be fun". So if I am in a funk I sit it down and get back to it tommorrow.
I ask a musician friend of mine his best advice and he said "practice and have fun". Same as the players on here are saying.

Sometimes you need to put it down for a day or two. Get your mind off of it then come back. When I do this I always come back better and more inspired. Good luck you,ll get over it.

Learn some easy songs and list them all out, so when you're feeling down you can go through any of the songs you can play. There are lots of easy songs and tunes around, so you can build a nice repertoire and it will help you feel good about yourself.
Positive good happiness stuff and all that, hey!! 8)
