Don't confuse composites with laminate tops. I'm not positive, but I don't believe Epi uses them either. I find the Epi's pretty nice guitars for the money.

hmmmm.... I got ya... I have heard that epiphone uses laminate (non-solid) bodies... But really I don't know for sure...

I apologize.. you are correct I confused composites with laminate...

A Les Paul should be a part of any guitarist's tonal toolbox......

My '94 R9 with AAAAA flametop. Plenty of squawk and growl on demand with a Fender tube amp.

I haven’t tried one (EPI) in a while. Last few times I did I found their quality severely lacking. That being said I have tried a bunch of Gibson’s lacking in the quality department as well. It’s like anything you got to find the right one, right feel, right tone, and so on. Same can be said for the entry level Paul Reed Smith guitars..the SE’s are said to be great quality.. me personally I like my guitar to be made of wood and don’t care for the veneer top they use on the SE.. they play great and sound good but not my cup of tea to have veneer on the prs, or low grade electronics on the epi’s.. consequently I cant find anything bad to say about Fender MIM…the occasional burr on a fret.. I think Fender is setting the standard for quality on entry / mid level guitars….wish the rest would take note

Cheers
Bill

yes lots to be desired on the PRS SE (student edition) guitars.
i was suprised to see they stooped to the level they did on these.
there could be better quality at the same price on those im afraid.

I empathize with you. Les Pauls look great, sound great, but don't play well. Having said that, I will say that that it's a matter of opinion. I know people who swear by Gibson and more power to them.

I own a Beautiful Ice Tea burst 2004 Les Paul and a Wine Red ES335. They are really nice guitars, BUT they sit in the case; and I know why. It's the neck and the fact that they are a one trick pony.

I love Les Pauls and ES335s from the '70s. The necks feel more like a Fender neck. With modern Les Pauls the radius of the neck is nice, but the curve of the back of the neck just doesn't feel right to me.

Also the pickups don't sound very unique to me. I strongly believe that Stratocasters bring more of the player out.

Strats and Teles much more personal guitars to me. I'll give you an example. Can anyone really tell the difference between Slash and Sack Wylde? I don’t really listen to those guys, so I could be completely wrong. If you listen to Strat players they all sound different no matter who they are. Also if you look at a bunch of Les Pauls can you tell whose is whose?

By the way as soon as I return from Iraq I'm selling both my Gibsons.
On a final note: Don’t rack your brain about what you don’t have. Enjoy what you do have. I’m going through the same problem. I’m in Iraq and I don’t any of my Strats with me. I do however have the internet and lots of pictures and article about Fender guitars.
I start going crazy over wanting a Custom Shop Strat or vintage ’62 Strat. I own 5 Strats and 2 Telecasters. What do I need another guitar for? I own 7 of the finest instruments on the planet.
I stop and think about it. I realized that it’s not that I want a new guitar. I really just miss mine.
Good luck and never stop playing!

Paris

oh man theres tons of differences between zakk and slash.
their styles and tone is totally different.
personally i would love a 335 but its not as high on my list as
a couple others. maybe when you get home (god speed)
you will have a waiting buyer for that 335.

as for the crap electronics on an epi , swap it asll out , a nice set of pups , cts pots ,pio caps , switchcraft switch and output and wire it up 50's style with some braided wire , it turns an epi into a tone monster that'll give a giby a run for it's money :)

What say you
A '56 Gold Top VOS with P90s:
A decent companion to an American Standard Stratocaster?
I played one of those things and really appreciate it's tone characteristics.
