been wanting a les paul classic, played one about a year ago and i thought i liked it, but i let it go. now i have myself dwelling over getting a les paul, so i went to guitar center yesterday to play a few.. well 5 actually. a standard, a traditional, a traditional pro, and 2 epi les pauls. and i played an sg classic with p90s. .....and a few strats and teles and a sweet pink squier strat.

overall, i hated the gibsons and the epis were better in ever aspect. i couldnt find the right feel, i couldnt find a good tone to save me and it just wasnt comfortable.

with all that said, i come home rather disapointed but i find myself on musicians friend website gawking at the new traditionals. ...is it me or is there just something about them??? i absolutely love the way they look, but i dont like their tone in the least.

my 99 gibson les paul custom has the best tone of any guitar I ever played... I have always loved the customs.. Not so much the studios or any of the epiphones.. The standards have good tone also...

I think the biggest problem with les pauls is the good ones are just not affordable... Back in the 1980s I can remember the les pauls were very much affordable nowadays... The fenders are much more affordable... You get more for your money with a strat or tele...

I was lucky enough to get my custom for only 1500...

I would going to someplace that has some vintage customs... play those and then get back to me...

i had a 74 les paul custom after i sold my old stat. it was a beautiful sounding guitar. low action- easy to play.

i sold it after i was in an accident, as the daggone thing was just too heavy! i injured my shoulder, and i couldn't play it for any period of time, but i am back to stratocasters again, and loving it

Maybe you should consider a quality knock off like ESP or others. I have a Cort (not much in the quality department) I never play.

LP's used to be made out of solid Mahogony and now are being made out of composits to brighten up their sound with tone caveties and all kinds of garbage.

Also the used market might have some hidden gems.

I want to build one someday like a three pickup monster Peter Frampton used to play.

Custom is the only way to go with Gibson IMO.

I am looking for a good '58 or a goldtop (I cant decide yet).

agreed. custom or standard. the spin off's are just that, spin off's.

Well I think if you look at Gibson specs you will find not all there guitars are new style weight relieved. Traditionals, Vos, Customs, in fact I think more are solid Mahog. and others are the traditional relief then the new version relief. Composites I don't know about that one in Lp's And don't forget there Maple caps being used for like ever. I have a LP thats solid Mahog. W/ Maple cap and a rock maple set neck even, a two custom plus deal.

I love my LP custom…tone for days…Your right not all of them sound great…I love the way my strats play but they just don’t have the sound…Don’t get me wrong they sound good and have good tone; just not my ultimate tone. At home I play my strats almost exclusively but playing out or playing through the amp and want it to sound right…My LP all the way…I love that darker ZZ top grawl I get from the shorter scale and the EMG pickups…I seem to be able to play faster on the paul then the strat. Don’t know why, strings are a bit closer together but I don’t think that is exclusively it…the les Paul sustains far longer than the strat but can’t do as big of bends or vibrato for blues on it… the single coils on the strat only give me all or clean when working the volume control and the all needs a boost to get it close to where I want it. Hum buckers have more range to play with and I like that. all personal preference and I’m sure glad I have both in my arsenal sound compound…

Cheers
Bill

As far as I know, there are no composites in LP's.

Don't confuse composites with laminate tops. I'm not positive, but I don't believe Epi uses them either. I find the Epi's pretty nice guitars for the money.

The 1959 Les Paul Tribute is exceptional. The LP Tribute standard is pretty sweet. Both use 57 Gibby pups and Switchcraft and Mallory electronics.
