"I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day. It was getting kind of long and i could have said it was in my way. But i didn't and i wonder why. "i'm gonna let my freak flag fly, because i feel, like i owe it to someone." - David Crosby.

Always meant alot to me this song when my father sat me down to listen to it one night and explained what it meant.

I like it !... My father would have just yelled at me that he didn't like my hair too long or shaved punk style...

Roland was a warrior from the land of the midnight sun
With a Thompson gun for hire - fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark - on a dark and stormy day
So they set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Warren Zevon

The pages of your life that you want to tear, now the inks long dried and is ours to share;
Let all be known and scars be shown, the deepest wounds can still be sewn.

and second favorite:

Our fears just keep our best dreams at bay, while tomorrow is no more certain than today. So live like it, love like it, and if you must, fight like it. For tonight, we just might fade away.

how about 2 songs that get us guys in trouble- from the 60's

"if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
never make a pretty woman your wife
so from my personal point of view
get an ugly girl to marry you"

or ernie k doe's "mother-in-law"

"sent from down below, mother in law"

most wives probably hate those two songs

Let it Ring-Amy Ray

"When you march, stand up straight
When you fill the world with hate
Step in time, with your kind, Let it Ring

Let it ring to Jesus, cause he'd sure be proud of you
You made fear an institution
And it got the best of you, so let it ring."

The Wood song-IG

"but the wood is tired and the wood is old,
We'll make it fine, if the weather holds
If the weather holds, we'll miss the point
Cause thats where I need to go"

Bring me some water-Melissa Etheridge

Lets give em something to talk about-Bonnie Raitt

I've always loved Jimi Hendrix's lyrics such as in Machine Gun,Axis Bold As Love,Little Wing,Angel,Castles Made Of Sand etc. Jimi could paint such bold and beautiful pictures with his lyrics.I also have always loved Donovan Leitch's lyrics such as Hampstead Incident,Legend of a Girl Child Linda,Portrait of a Widow With a Shawl etc. like Jimi he had an inate sense of imagery. The lyrics of Viv Stanshall and Neil Innes of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band are unbelieveably brilliant as well as hilarious yet they could write poignant and Beatleseque songs such as Don't Get Me Wrong,Ready Maids and I Want To Be With You.I also give The Who a vote, Townshend and Entwhistle were brilliant lyricists.Heinz Baked Beans and the whole Sell Out album is a masterpiece, the lyrics of Tattoo are a riot.BTW if you ever see Viv Stanshalls Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead or Neil Innes's How Sweet To Be An Idiot buy them ,you'll laugh your rectal sphincter off.

Bob Dylan--Ring Them Bells

Ring them bells ye heathen from the city that dreams
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries cross the valleys and streams
For they're deep and they're wide
And the world on its side
And time is running backwards
And so is the bride.

Ring them bells Saint Peter where the four winds blow
Ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know
Oh it's rush hour now
On the wheel and the plow
And the sun is going down upon the sacred cow.

Ring them bells Sweet Martha for the poor man's son
Ring them bells so the world will know that God is one
Oh the shepherd is asleep
Where the willows weep
And the mountains are filled with lost sheep

Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf
Ring them bells for all of us who are left
Ring them bells for the chosen few
Who will judge the many when the game is through
Ring them bells for the time that flies
For the child that cries
When innocence dies.

Ring them bells Saint Catherine from the top of the room
Ring them from the fortress for the lilies that bloom
Oh the lines are long and the fighting is strong
And they're breaking down the distance between right and wrong.

Almost anything by John Hiatt, but "Most Unoriginal Sin" is a great starting point...

"And you needed no proof
Cuz the whole naked truth
Was wearing only an infidel's grin
And a proud schoolboy's boast
of having left his post for the most unoriginal sin..."

Most songs by Joe Ely make me stop and take notice as well.
