I ask because we have two trash pickups a week Recycle pickup is for every thing that is recyclable with a number 1 thru 7 on it. The other pickup is trash that is not recyclable but since going to single stream recycle we don't have to separate the recycle materials it has been much easier and we find that about 60% of stuff go to recycle.
Is this a common practice where you are?

Everyone recycles by here. I still live at home, and the old lady's logic is that it saves on garbage bags. Well, despite the flawed sense in that, recycling really is the right thing to do. Not to sound smug, but at this point it's almost ignorant not to.

I recycle licks. :P

Seriously though, I don't know if they even do that in my neighborhood. If they do no one does it. I think if I knew when the day for pickup was (if there is one) and I had a recycle bin, then I'd do it. I have nothing against it.

Yes.
When I eat, I poop.

What gets me is how the refuse companies take your milk bottles in the truck but refuse it at the recycle center.
Don't want to pay out do ya??

It's a politically corrupt wonderland - you cannot throw your old electronics away, but you must take it to the refuse company recycling center who will not pay you for your deed of responsibility.
They get paid by international entities who send it to places like indonesia or india to recycle and the people there get sick.

Enviromental concerns are legit but when greedy and corrupt politics get in the way of common sense, it touches a nerve.

No, not like I should. At work I do. At home I don't. Only because the development I live in makes it very difficult. We used to be able to package our things up nicely and leave them by our compactor. Now they want us to walk a few blocks to the nearest recycling dumpster. Really? How many people do you think will do this?

We do too. It just makes sense. I heard an interview on NPR where 70% of our plastics are bought by China and are recycled there and manufactured into new bottles, clothing, shoes etc and are sold in China. In the US we still use virgin petroleum products to manufacture plastic products. Pretty sad when you think about it. We use most of the worlds plastics but supply the rest of the world with material to recycle. Go figure.

The city of San Antonio provides us with two rolling bins: a brown one for trash and a blue one for recycling. We dutifully put all our paper, metal plastic and glass in the blue one.

Recycling was mandatory when I was stationed in Germany. We had different-colored bags for different materials: food garbage, paper, plastic and glass/metal. Four different bags in the kitchen and on the curb. It was a pain.

I have to admit I'm conflicted about recycling. I think it's a good idea, but I'm skeptical that it really happens as advertised. Hell, even Michael Moore refuses to recycle.

So it may be a charade intended to make me feel like I'm saving the Earth, but I keep doing it anyway. 8)

Been doing it for years and years, yes. Complex arrangement of different bins for different waste; different collection days; other arrangements for light bulbs and dry cells; yadda yadda...

I'm fine with it, but it's a certain amount of hassle. Still, Scandinavian and Germanic countries are way ahead of us with it, so...

This is absolutely true. I've seen film of the huge container ships that bring all our consumer goodies from China sailing back again loaded with crushed plastic bottles. They then go onto vast, vast mounds where poor kids crawl across them sorting out the useful from the unrecycleable plastic.

Insane. How is it we can't invent technology to do this at home? How can shipping our trash to the other side of the world be good for the planet?

Bizarro.

Cheers - C

I think its mandatory here, we have blue bins for general waste, green one for recycling and brown ones for biodegradable things (including small brown bins with biodegradable bags for food.
A few years ago there was a program on about recycling facilities here and how they couldn't cope with the amount of recycling being done, it was just piling up.I'm not sure if this is still the case.

We've been recycling for many years. It's definitely a two edged sword. For instance, plastic, glass or tin food containers have to be cleaned, (for sanitation reasons), which means using water. Sometimes they even make it into the dishwasher, which means using HOT water!

I have, in my basement, a microwave, 2 computers, a VCR, a moniter and a motorcycle battery that all have to be delivered to different "recycling" depots in my fuel burning vehicle.

We are spending a lot of time, energy and fuel to recycle. I hope we're doing the right thing.

Peace, Gridlok 8)
