Very interesting question. I'd like to know what brought it on.

Back in my younger drug induced days I remained sleepless for about 9 1/2 days. Now I did say sleepless, but said nothing about being functional.

About 48 hours -- it's amazing how working overnights can mess with your sleeping schedule!

This sounds unbelievable, but it really is true. I didn't sleep for nearly a week about four years ago. I was already in my 40s and did it with no chemicals or coffee or anything.

I was nursing my mother in her last days of life. When that ended I took a normal night's sleep and then carried on. I kept waiting for the wall to hit me but it never did.

Amazing what the mind and body can do when they have to.

Cheers - C

Roughly 55 or so hours when I was in my company's tech support dept. We had three "pre-release" systems to build that came in late Friday afternoon and had to be out the door at 7AM sharp Monday. They came in around 5 PM and we finished at nearly midnight Sunday night.

Then my colleague and I got about 6 hours total to go home, clean up, sleep and be back to deliver the systems and do our normal 10 hour day. So end to end, it was really close to three days.

I used to stay awake all night when I was little just for the fun of it. But I'd usually take a nap sometime about 8 a.m. so it doesn't really count. And I've had many all nighters to learn guitar stuff. Most of them happened about a year ago when I was trying to learn SRV songs left and right.

I think there's only been two times in my life when I've had serious lack of sleep. I stayed up about 36-40 hours once helping my Mom put together a garage sale. It wasn't fun, but that's what earned me a set of Texas Specials. :)

But the worst one ever was the time I had to stay up about 50 hours during the Rita evacuation. At the time we really thought there was a good chance that a Category 5 storm would hit Houston and that we may not be able to come back for a long time. It was right on the heels of Katrina and everyone was scared to death. We packed up all the belongings we could, all of our pets (we practically had a zoo at the time) and drove to Abilene in west Texas. It's usually a seven hour drive, but it look us all night and into the next day, a total of 14 hours, to get there. We were draining physically and emotionally so as soon as we got to my Uncle's house everyone fell asleep instantly.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I couldn't resist, I have to know.

Any particular reason? I just want to know before I tell you.

Typically people encounter a reason why they have to stay up for at least 24 hours at least once in their lives. Wars, hurricanes, waiting for tickets etc. I'm 17 and it's happened to me more than once, which is why I'm curious about your age. If you don't want to say you don't have to, I understand. I never mentioned my age online until very recently. :)

Well, you'll probably get your chance soon enough. :D If you were like 40 or something I'd be pretty amazed though.

I was right there along with you. Even though I live in San Antonio, I drove to Houston (Pasadena, actually) to help my parents and grandmother get out. We took Highway 90 Alt through Sugarland and Rosenberg, up 71 to Columbus, and finally I-10 to San Antonio. What is usually a four-hour trip took us 29 hours (including 4-5 hours stuck in Columbus trying to get some gas). No damn fun, that's for sure.

We left the night before the big rush of people and traveled on the back roads all night. And thank God we did because it would've been a lot worse if we hadn't. I don't know how all those people who ran out of gas and got stranded did it. If the hurricane really had hit people would've died on the road.

My Dad was working as one of the volunteer directors of a Red Cross shelter at my church for people who made it out of New Orleans on the buses. He pulled lots of long hours there, especially when they had to close down the shelter because of Rita. He was totally knocked out by the time we left, so my Mom drove most of the way.
At one point I nearly got some sleep, but my dog went to sleep on my back so that basically killed any chance of it.
