i have a custom strat and a custom Les Paul Axcess--they are completely different guitars with so much variation in sound--i usually grabthe gibson for working on new songs and the strat for working on the leads----i dont know of any reason to own more guitars than these 2. except i'll probably buy another 1 of each just to bang around and save the customs

Good topic.

To answer your question: No, I don't need all the guitars I own. Hell I use about half of them and the other half stay in the case. I'm planning on selling few of them, but I don't regret getting them.

I own:
EC Strat
HWY1
Parts-o-caster with rosewood neck, stained alder body and Texas Spec. PUPs
40th Anniversary Strat
'96 Strat*
Muddy Waters Tele*
Andy Summers Parts-o-caster
Les Paul*
ES335*
Three basses and bunch of acoustic guitars*

*Selling

I generally take one maybe two guitars to a gig. The one time I brought 5 and used 1, because the weather was causing havoc with tuning. It was a pain in the butt. Never again.

I don't even like hearing two Strats or Tele's in the same band at the same time. It sounds too one dimensional to me. One of each is great even better with one Humbucker guitar and one single coil guitar. A Strat or Tele and a LP or Gretsch IMO sounds great. There's a local band I call the Strats. The lead and rhythm guys both play Strats, different models but still too similar in tone. It just sounds like one big guitar. The amps are different, but it still sounds so similar it bothers me. Neither guitarist has a distinct different voice. When it's two Road Worn Strats or Tele's, the guys look like little girls who are best friends and wear the same outfits to school and again sound like the Bobbsey Twins. LOL

Nobody agrees with me on this one.... my theory is that the more guitars you own, and the more guitars you play, the less of an individual voice you will have.

I prefer to "master" my number 1 guitar. The rest are just for giggles and to stare at.

Of all the guitars I own, I rarely play any of them, only my number one. I know that guitar inside and out and can make it sing far better than any of my other guitars.

I can admire that. The only thing bad about only having 1guitar is if it needs to go to the shop for anything, your out of luck for playing.

Of course the con to owning multiple guitars is the maintainance for three guitars.

lol thats to dang funny.
i can agree with you on 2 single coil guitars in the same band.
the over all sound is usually to thin. the tone of both rigs would have to be
very different to break down the thin wall if ya know what i mean.

sorry it took me so long to get back onto my own thread, i had to drive from lawrence to wichita yesterday for a corporate meeting, and then back again to lawrence last night. about 4 or 5 hour round trip. amd then had to stay at work today for another meeting. iv had 9 hours of sleep in the last 3 days but right now i cant feel anything lol.

but back to the topic, i really want another guitar, i think having a couple of strats would be cool and i also think having all different guitars would be cool. sweet tone is really what i am after (and the guitar has to look cool too lol) iv thought about getting a used les paul classic for a meatier tone, or getting an ES-339 for a thicker sound. i want to shy away from two single coil guitars at the same time. maybe get a tele or something as a third axe, but im not really into collecting gear. i just want what i know i will play.

Some interesting points to consider in many of the posts--both the pros & cons.

But here's a list of both off the top of my head.

Pros of more than one guitar
1-You have a back up guitar
2-You have more variety, and I like variety
3-Different guitars for different purposes
4-When friends are over, it's easier to jam.
5-It can open up different playing & performing opportunities because you have the guitar(s) you need for it.
6-It's fun.
7-I like jumbo frets, I like medium frets, I like frets that almost aren't there.
8-I like humbuckers, I like single coils, I like acoustic guitars as well.
9-I love 12 string guitars, but don't always want to play 12 strings.
10-I like playing classical every now & then and it sounds better on a classical guitar.
11-Open tunings
12-vibrato & fixed bridge--you can do both
13-I play differently on each one--so I am becoming more versatile, and yet my personality & style shows through
14-Does this include bass? Because it's fun to play bass sometimes.

Cons-
1-Spend more on strings.
2-Spend more time changing strings
3-Spend more time and/or money on set ups
4-That's about it.

Get the 339 or if you can afford one the CS-336 or 356 are beautiful!
